Unknown Error Occured whenever I try to install Late Night Expansion pack [MAC]

★★★ Newbie

I just bought the Sims 3 last night, and I was able to install the stuff pack that was included but late night expansion wont work? I've reinstalled, troubleshooted and done some research but I haven't found much of a solution. Every time it still comes up with the same message "Unknown error occurred". I have a Mac and its version 10.13.2, High Sierra.

Thanks

@chickendorit0s  The unknown error is to be expected whenever installing certain packs (the others are Ambitions, Fast Lane, and Outdoor Living) on a mac.  It's entirely fixable, provided your computer is adequate to run TS3.  (If you're not sure, or if you still get the error after completing the following steps, you can post your specs here for more input.)

First, since you've uninstalled and reinstalled, you might want to do a manual uninstall before proceeding.  The uninstaller that comes with TS3 is unreliable and may have missed some files; those could get in the way when you try to launch the game.

When you're ready, install the base game only.  Then manually patch using the Super Patch (digital download version).  Even if the game thinks it's patched, it might not be, and running the Super Patch isn't going to hurt.

Try to launch the game and verify that it works properly.  If you get the unknown error with the base game only, or if it refuses to load, there may be another step—editing the .sgr files—to force the game to recognize your graphics card.  This is only necessary for some newer macs, mostly those with integrated Intel graphics chips, so hopefully you can skip this step entirely.

When the base game is functioning properly, you can download Late Night and any other packs you have.  You'll need to figure out which of your packs is the newest by release date; if it's LN, you can skip the instructions in the first link below.  If not, you're going to need to copy some files from LN's folder into the folder of the newest pack, as they didn't get copied automatically as is supposed to happen.  Regardless, you should follow the instructions in the second link to manually create an alias for the LN pack, as one likely does not already exist in your Applications folder, alongside the alias for the base game.

Once you've completed these steps, you should be able to launch and play TS3.  If not, please post your mac's specs here for more specific advice.

One last thing:  In case you weren't aware, you don't need to have Origin running in the background in order to play TS3 on a mac.  That's only for PC users who were forced onto patch 1.69.  Mac users stay on 1.67, which is just as current and merely lacks the mandatory Origin tie-in.

Hi,

I have a iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017) running high Sierra 10.13.4 & also having trouble trying to get the sims 3 to play. I have the base game installed and upon clicking to play it says "unknown error occurred"

@stacie1994  If you only have the base game and have yet to install any packs, you can try patching using the Super Patch (digital download version).

This could fix your issue, but you might also have a processor/graphics card combination that's incompatible with TS3.  In that case, your best bet would be editing the .sgr files.  The best guide for this doesn't list any 2017 imacs, but the expert who wrote the guide (Bluebellflora) is still helping people get the game going on their macs.  So if you could post your computer's specs here—be sure to list both integrated and dedicated graphics cards, if you have them—she'll be able to give you specific instructions on how to proceed.
