SIMS3 MAC unknown error occurred

★★★ Newbie

Hello

This has been raised before but I am struggling to solve it! EA sent me some resolution methods that did not work.

Trying to play The Sims 3 (I have the starter pack but I am focusing just on installing main TS3 game)

MAC OSX - Mojave 10.14

iMAC Late 2013

Processor 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce FT 750M 1024 MB

When launching game (through Origin or through folder) comes up with Unknown Error Occurred

I have re-installed, used malware to clean computer, clean Origin cache, cleared cookies etc!

@Riggnism  First of all, you don't need to clean Origin's cache.  For macs, EA has created a tool that does it for you in one motion:

https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/origin/origin/how-to-reset-origin-on-mac/

It's probably a good idea to start with a clean uninstall before reinstalling just the base game.  There are some hidden library files that the uninstaller misses, and cleaner apps don't always do a thorough job in mac OS.  They can also delete critical files, so it's best to avoid them entirely.  Here's how to find those hidden TS3 files:

https://bluebellflora.com/how-to-do-a-clean-uninstall-and-reinstall-on-a-mac/

Once you've reinstalled the base game, run the Super Patch (digital download version) to patch to level 1.67.  The launcher doesn't do a thorough job of patching on its own.

Next, try to launch the game.  If it works, you can install your packs.  High-End Loft Stuff is fine, but Late Night doesn't install correctly and needs a workaround.  It's simple enough:

If you can't launch the patched base game, you'll need to edit the game's .sgr files to force recognition of your card.  The guide for it doesn't specifically list an Nvidia 750m, but you can still follow the instructions.

Or, if you'd prefer some help with this step (or at least check your work), you can provide the device ID of your graphics card, and we can show you what to do.  Here's the necessary info:

Edit:  I've moved this topic to the dedicated Sims/mac section, since this is entirely an OS issue.  Please let me know if you need any more help.
