Game requires a patch. Updated already and cleared the cache. Game continues to shut down during play. I have tried to follow the tutorials online to do the patch, but when I go to Finder > Applications, there is no The Sims 3, just Origin so I can't follow the directions. I've put in support cases and been referred to chat and chat can't help and sends me to post here.

@missfelicityk If you're running the 64-bit version of Sims 3, your game is already fully patched and doesn't need an update to install store stuff. The game is likely installed here:
Macintosh HD > Users > your username > Applications
For the store content issues, please try downloading from the store website using Firefox and installing through the launcher. The in-game mechanism isn't always reliable, and neitehr are the error messages.
