My Sims 3 Pets game won't load despite having the disk inserted (MAC)

I insert my Sims 3 Pets disk and both at the start up screen and the screen where you have to choose a town, a pop up appears saying I havent inserted it. I've tried re-inserting it etc. but nothing seems to work. I bought the copy and it has worked fine before.
