Dear Simmers,

We hope you’re all doing well. If you are a Mac user, please read the below!

If you currently play The SimsTM 4 and run macOS Lion (10.7) there will be important changes you need to know about. Starting next month, we will be unable to support macOS Lion (10.7). On October 3, 2019 we will release a patch update that will no longer support The Sims 4 on that operating system.

If you wish to continue playing the game while running macOS Lion (10.7), do not update The Sims 4 with the October 3 patch, or any future game patches. To prevent the update, you will need to disable automatic updates on Origin. This will allow you to continue playing the game, however, you will not receive any future updates for the base game or be able to play any additional packs released after October 3.

macOS Lion (10.7) Q&A

How do I disable automatic updates on Origin?

To disable Auto-Update in the Origin 9 client:

  • Go to the "Origin" drop-down menu and select "Preferences"
  • In the "General" section, under "Updates," un-check the “Automatically keep my games up to date" option

This will prevent automatic updates from being applied to any Origin games you own. You will still be notified when updates are available, but you will need to manually choose to download updates. Make sure not to manually download The Sims 4 updates.

Will I have access to the Gallery if I don’t get any additional updates?

Yes, you will continue to have access to the Gallery where you can both upload and download content.

WIll my progress be saved if I don’t get updates?

Yes, your existing game-saves will be preserved.

Will I be able to continue playing with all the packs I own?

Yes, all packs that you have purchased and installed will still be installed. Any packs you have purchased and have not yet installed will still be available for download from the Origin client.

Which packs will I be able to play?

You will be able to play all released packs up to and including Realm of Magic.

I use macOS Lion (10.7) and accidentally installed the October patch for The Sims 4. Is there anything I can do?

Spoiler

The Sims 4 Legacy Edition will support macOS Lion (10.7), please, read all the details here.

If you use a backup program such as the macOS “Time Machine” utility then you can use it to restore the prior version of The Sims 4 before the patch. Please, make sure to follow these steps carefully and seek help if needed as they can lead to undesirable outcomes when not done the right way.

Before restoring the prior version please make sure to disable “Automatic Updates” in the Origin client as explained above. Note that this will preserve any game-saves you have created.

Typical steps:
1. Disable automatic updates in the Origin client:

Go to the "Origin" drop-down menu and select "Preferences"
In the "General" section, under "Updates," un-check the “Automatically keep my games up to date" option
2. Open the Time Machine application in your Applications folder
3. Navigate to the Applications folder within the Time Machine folder interface
4. Select the most recent backup prior to The Sims 4 update from the selection interface on the right side of the screen
5. Select the The Sims 4 application
6. Click the Restore button
7. If prompted specify that the existing application should be replaced by the version being restored
8. Exit Time Machine

The Sims 4 should now be able to be played.

Is this only for macOS Lion because I have macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6? If this does not affect mine, will it at some point in the future? Do you guys plan to stop supporting all Mac software versions?

★★★ Newbie

Does this only apply to Lion, or all versions following Lion as well? I currently play on a Mac running Mojave.

What's the point of this? No real reason that I can see to prevent people who play on this device from getting any new updates or packs.

@Lyndsay_Land @samicharae

Just Lion.

@nerdfashion

I would hazard a guess that it is to make the game Catalina compatible by fixing the 32-bit ActivationUI issue. This is based on this fix being implemented last April but having to be rolled back because it no longer worked for Lion users. Catalina is due to be released imminently and the majority of Apple users will update to it.

@Lyndsay_Land This currently only applies to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. As of today, macOS Mojave is the latest version of Mac so you shouldn't have to worry about your computer becoming unsupported yet.

@samicharae If your computer is currently running macOS Sierra 10.12 then it is also compatible with macOS High Sierra 10.13. I would recommend updating. Apple usually supports the three recent versions of macOS so macOS Sierra 10.12 will become unsupported when Apple releases macOS Catalina 10.15 in the near future. What model Mac do you have?
