Im having issues with the sims 3

★★★ Novice

I Just downloaded the sims 3. I was playing just fine and then I logged out and went to finish up the downloading process of the expansion packs (Late Night, Showtime, University Life). When I finished downloading it wouldn't launch the game and it would constantly say "unknown error". I thought if I uninstall the expansion packs it would finally work but it didn't. I made mistake by trashing both items in "Trash". Now Im just confused and I really want to play this game.

Can someone help me Plz.

@Simlifemetroboom  The unknown error issues are almost always solveable, especially since you've already launched the base game on this computer.  Since you've already deleted some files, though, it's a good idea to start with a clean uninstall.  Otherwise, the remnants of the deleted packs could prevent you from launching the game going forward.

If you want to keep your saves intact, be sure to remove your TS3 game folder from Documents first.  Just put it on your desktop or something, and it won't get deleted.

After you've finished the uninstall, you can reinstall the base game only, and then run the Super Patch (digital download version) to manually patch the game to 1.67.  The launcher doesn't do a good job of patching on its own, and will often report the game as patched when it's still missing some updates.

Now you can start installing your packs.  Late Night is the one causing the unknown error—it's one of four packs that doesn't install correctly.  You'll need to apply two fixes, but they're both fairly straightforward.  The first is to create an alias for LN in Applications, alongside the alias for the base game:

The second is to copy a folder from Late Night into the folder for your newest pack by the date EA released it.  From your list, that would be University Life.  (If you have a newer pack installed, such as Into the Future, that's where the Late Night files will go.)  This video will show you exactly what to do:

If you happen to own any of the other three problem packs (Ambitions, Fast Lane, Outdoor Living), you'll need to the same for them.

And if any of this doesn't work, or you have more questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you for helping me but I tried the patch method and it didn't work and now the base game is saying unknown error and so are my other expansion packs.

Could it be that playing the sims 3 is better on a windows than a Mac computer because I think the Mac has way too many problems. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong. I am so confused and frustrated, is there anyway I can fix my problem a little easier. I want to thank you for the help.

Re: Im having issues with the sims 3

@Simlifemetroboom  Sims 3 definitely runs better in Windows than macOS, due to the way it was ported.  If you have a strong enough Windows system to play on, that would be the better option.

However, you should still be able to get the game running on your mac.  When you uninstalled, did you follow the guide to remove all the hidden library files?  Leaving even one behind is enough to cause an unknown error.

If this isn't the issue, please provide the specs of your mac.  Every once in a while, the unpatched version of TS3 will run on certain hardware, but the patched version won't.  However, skipping the patch isn't an option when you're installing packs.  Here's how to find the specs of your mac:

@Simlifemetroboom  I've moved your thread to the Sims/Mac section.  Please let me know if you have any other questions, or if you still need help with something.
