I am not being able to play from previously saved games.

  When I press the play button it takes me directly to making a family, thus every time I want to play I have to start all over again.

It's been so long since I've started an entirely fresh Sims game, but have you selected the "Load Game" option beneath the play button to see if your saved game appears there? Once highlighting the save you want hit the disk labelled "load" at the bottom right of the pop-up window to start your saved game.(Should you happen to find it there.)

Did you remember to save the game when Exiting?

Also if you created a household and didn't place them in a neighborhood then it will not save.

As keenow wrote try to load a game. If there is no saves there check to see if you have any files in:

Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves
