That video only describes the fix for one of the six different causes of the unknown error message, and doesn't cover all the details about that one approach, either.  Luckily, Bluebellflora wrote a comprehensive guide to installing Sims 3 in macOS.  It's in her master help thread pinned to the top of this forum, or you can find the guide in this post:

I have never played TS3 on this laptop as it is pretty new, but here's my issue. I downloaded and installed TS3 Starter Pack from Origin, download and installation went fine. Then I tried to launch and it wouldn't get past the blue screen with the plumbob without an error. So I followed Bluebellflora's directions and now I get the unknown error popup and can't even get the game to launch at all. I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice now, but not through the uninstaller, as my game doesn't even show up as an option to be uninstalled, so  I moved all the folders and add-ons to the trash. I am unsure what to do at this point, if the game is just not compatible for my laptop then I guess I'll just have to deal with that but I used to play TS3 all the time on a desktop before my sister lost the disk. Any help would be appreciated. Below is the error I get and my computer information. Thanks.

macOS Mojave Version 10.14.2

MacBook Pro (13", 2017)

2.3 GHz intel core i5

16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3

Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB

@rhyeneldridge  Your particular model Mac usually runs Sims 3 just fine, once a couple of steps have been taken to fix certain issues with how the game installs.  Most people running Mojave find that they don't even need to add their graphics card to the game's database, although that's not too complicated if it turns out to be necessary.  Hopefully you'll be able to skip that step though.

Please start by doing a clean uninstall of everything Sims 3-related.  In case you didn't see this before, here's Bluebellflora's guide:

https://bluebellflora.com/how-to-do-a-clean-uninstall-and-reinstall-on-a-mac/

Install the base game only, and run the Super Patch to manually patch to 1.67.

Now try to launch the game.  If you get an unknown error, let me know.  If you get the license server error, that's fine, you can ignore it for now.  Just install High-End Loft Stuff and Late Night, then create an alias (icon) for Late Night in Applications, alongside the alias for the base game.  Here's how:

Hi Zoe

I have just tried to download that version of Origin onto my Macbook Air Early 2015 13inch and it struggles to load Origin. It bounces at the bottom of my screen in the dock but doesn't launch the application.

Re: The Sims 3 Won't Work on New Macbook

@shannonlouise7  The version of Origin you're probably referencing is wildly out of date and won't run at all anymore.  Please follow these instructions for manually uninstalling Origin to clear out any related files you find:

https://bluebellflora.com/how-to-uninstall-origin-on-a-mac/

Then download a new version from here:

https://www.origin.com/usa/en-us/store/download

Let me know if it doesn't work.

@shannonlouise7  This is what I'm saying, the version you installed is likely completely out of date.  I didn't download it, but that post is four years old.

@puzzlezaddict I followed the steps you described. Installed the patch, still getting the "Unknown error occurred" error. Any suggestions?

The spec is:
MacBook Air (13-inch, 2019)
Processor: 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 8GB
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 617

macOS Mojave.
