This appears to be an AMD GPU issue. I booted into the Sierra partition on an external drive on my Mac with NVIDIA GPU and the game works fine, fully updated. Specs are:
Mid 2012 15" MacBook Pro
2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
16GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD 4000 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M (game uses NVIDIA)
Config file is showing the Metal driver, same as the Config file on a Mac with AMD.

Hi Bluebellflora,
I'm experiencing what the initial poster experienced.
Sierra (10.12.6), iMac (5k retina, 27-inch, Late 2014)
3.5 GHz Intel Core i5
8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon R9 M29OX 2048 MB
I don't understand what you're staying about booting into the Sierra partition on an external drive. Do you have a newb version of steps required to make my game (and computer) work again?
Thanks!! :D

Hi, I can open Origin as normal but when I try to open Sims 4 my Mac laptop crashes.
I first get a fully black screen, then after about a minute a half black screen on the right and my desktop and the rotating circle icon on the left side. Everything but the icon on the desktop is frozen. After several minutes the icon stops rotating too, and the only solution is a hard reboot of my laptop.
I downloaded the Origin patch yesterday, followed by the Sims 4 patch, but didn't open the game itself at that point. Today, when I opened Origin, there was another patch which I downloaded.
I don't know which of these three patches has caused the problem, but I have had it ever since the third one today. I repaired the game, but opening Sims 4 afterwards crashed my laptop just as before. I am not running any antivirus and I don't use CC/mods.
My laptop specs are:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)
Processor 2.9 ghz Intel core 17
Memory 16GB 2133 mhz LPDDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 630 1536MB
Video card
Intel Video Graphics 630
Radeon Pro 560
I'd be very grateful if you could help. I have preordered University, and as of now Sims 4 is unplayable. Thanks for any advice or assistance.

I'm sorry you're all having problems too, but I am relieved to know it's not just me. Does anyone know if there is somewhere official we can submit problems with the patch?

I just updated my OS and I am still unable to open the game. Am I doing something wrong? Despite being a millennial, I'm not great with technology.
