Cannot afford any lots and cheats don't work

I just started playing. Made 8 Sims and went to get them a lot for the first time. I can't afford any lots. Tried turning cheats on, but it says that I am unable to use the command -- so I can't use FreeRealEstate or anything. Nothing. I just want to start playing!!! I tried making a new household, and no matter how many times I redo, I always have -44.000$... I don't know what to do. I have never played this game before and now I can't even get started.

Hi there @DOKIDOTS,

Is the cheat command box not opening for you, or are you getting an error when you try to enter any cheat codes? Could you also let me know which console you're playing on please?
