This fix worked for me. Let me say both thank you and I am sorry. Thank you for being the top answer for this question, so I didn't  spend hours trying to figure this out. & I'm sorry, because this is ridiculous that you have to go through all this just to play the game. Steam should at least provide a disclaimer that you will still need to DL the EA game client (now called Origin btw) and cut and paste your CD key into it, otherwise you won't be able to play online. Jeebus.
