EA help is no help at all for this issue. I have wasted more time on hold with these sim city ' specialists' than I care to admit to. This game is hopeless, and there is no fix in sight. EA thinks we are holding comfort in the promice of 'working soon' and 'try again later'. A free game is an insult to us who still have no working product, whilst being in the fourms bombarded with people dealing with in-game problems.
thanks for letting the community down EA.

A format and reinstall of windows worked for me. Nothing EA suggested to me worked, so I got fed up and went thermonuclear on it's butt. There's clearly something wrong with origin that needs to be addressed if this is what it comes down to.
Folks, if you find a solution please come back to this post and let us know what worked for you so we can have a list of as many potential solutions as possible in one place.

If you have ever installed a cracked version of an Origin game, that crack may have blocked access to EA's activation servers. Please see the following article on how to reset your hosts file if this is the case:

I think experts have given up on trying to resolve this Issue. Experts wont even pick up phonecalls for this issue even any more it appears, whilst live chat people insist the problem can be solved by posting on the fourms.... This has gotten pathetic.
I did not pay EA for the cost of a game, and have them expect me to be satisfied with an older 'im sorry' game.
IFFFF EA gets the message that this issue is not solved, and IS a problem, I'll be amazed...

Hi guys,
First and foremost it's an error message that can appear in Origin when something is preventing the authentification process.
This can happen when authentification servers are down. In this case the only thing to do is to try again later.
However if the issue persists it's usually a connectivity issue.
Things to check:
Don't use a proxy, including the one IE10 sets by default for Windows 8 users.
Refresh the connection by turning the computer off and on again.
If the issues persists after that, starting the computer in Safe Mode with Networking will allow to test if a 3rd party software is interfering.
And if it's still not working then only an advisor will have the tools to check what is happening.
Also more details about programs that may cause conflict with Origin are available here.

I had this issue on my secondary computer, I realized it was caused by a fix that I had previously made in order to allow me to log into Origin.
I am not guarenteeing a fix for everyone but it is something I had long forgotten about.
Inside C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
I had added the line
127.0.0.1 proxy.novafusion.ea.com
Removing this allowed me to authenticate successfully
