Can 2 players on the same console play Star Wars Battlefront online with friends

We just got this game and figured out how to play split screen just the two of us, but now we’d like to play the couple across the street (also 2 players on the same console). However, it seems like if we want to play with each other only one person from each house can be on and the game isn’t allowing split screen for online play. Is this true??? And if so... why? Thank you!

@ajc_366 There is only local split screen.

It would require stronger hardware to use it also in online play.
