Ranger buff/rework ideas, interested in all opinions

[Ranger]

 

In the shortest is a all around fun character to play, I mean who dosent want to feel like iron man,
Melting foes with the simple extension of the wrist,
Now with that in mind,
If you take our 3 main area's of play, easy, normal, hard, thin yes ranger feels like a well rounded javelin, but once you jump off that cliff and dive into grandmaster, the real endgame.
That is ware this suit is no longer viable, that single target destroyer you love, no longer exist.

With that being said.


Let's dive in shall we,


I personally would like to see a rework

of our ranger javelin.

 

After playing many hours of high teir play,

 

[grandmaster 1]
[grandmaster 2]
[grandmaster 3]

 

Ranger by far feels the weakest
out of are 4 javelins,

 

  • Ranger
  • Colossus
  • Storm
  • Interceptor

As a ranger in grandmaster,
you feel as if you have no real perpose


This should not be the case with any javelin.

 

 

[My opinion]


I believe ranger should be
a weapon-support focused javelin.
Geared towards single target sustain,
anything firearm or health related
should be this suits specialty.

 

A jack of all traits if you will.

 

I feel gun damage should not nesecarly be the focus of this suit but a much needed complement.

 

 

Currently I feel this suit is dull.
How do you overcome this barrier?
Well hear is a few ideas I can offer.

 

 

[Wear do we begin?]

 

Well First I feel we should start with
rangers gernade system. There are many mixed feeling about this gear slot, elemetal grenades are cool but for many people this is not there desire, allthough being underpowered I dont feel like you would nescerly have to get rid of thease grenades.

 

Allowing a more open style gear slot like are fellow interceptor, I feel would be much more viable, allowing immense versatility for you the player. Ultimately adding even more unique beam/rocket style weaponery, geared towards single target sustain.

 

another route you could take is adding an additional third gear slot, giveing this jack of all traits the best of both worlds,

 

With that said I think we can all agree this gear slot needs an overhaul an if gernades so happens to be your thing well heres a solution I can offer,

 

a rework to rangers gernade system.

 

[Gernade option]

 

Haveing two sets of grenades

players can choose from.

 

    FIRST

  • A primer based set
  • A set of 3
  • Fire
  • Ice
  • Poison


Allowing you to be the ultimate primer of the group, setting the team up for combos.

 

    Second

  • A support based set
  • A set of 3
  • Normal frag
  • Health gernade
  • Armor gernade

A health or armor gernade can be thrown to an allied position detonating on impact, separating into 4 or 5 health or armor pickups allowing you, to support a team member desperately in need in a moment's notice.

 

 

Now the second feature I believe we as players should focus on, is rangers lack of damage output. Especially on gear based abilities. I feel an Overhaul on damage is a much needed buff, here is a solution I can offer that would buff damage all around,

 

[Damage option]

 

 introduce a new perk.

 


[Lone Ranger]

 

How this perk would perform,
The first halve of the perk

  • Damage

The further you are from a target

the more damage you do

 

        For example 

        10 feet = 10% more damage

        100 feet = 100%

        Caping out at 100 - 200%

 

This damage buff would apply to all gear, and special abilities.
This would allow ranger to be the eyes of the battlefield well giveing him the damage buff he needs and deserves

 

now that you have a birds eye view of the battle field, you can see a downed team member, you rush in to revive them, now introduce the second half.

 

  • SUPPORT 

the closer you are to a team member

the more health and armor you gain

 

        For example 

        feet from team member
        30 feet = 50% health armor buff
        20 feet = 75%
        10 feet or less 100%


Doubling your health and armor

allowing you to support your team when necessary

 

 

Last I feel ranger lacks that special oompff compared to fellow suits, Colossus has his wall like shield, interceptor has his devestating close quarters combat, and storm masters all elements, but what dose ranger have, what I feel is necessary is giving our rangers a unique ability of there own, now we can agree to disagree but considering this suit is more for single target sustain, I feel gun damage is more of a single target weaponary, that would complement rangers well, an let me ensure this feature I dont feel like gun play should be rangers main damage but i do feel that it is that needed touch,


[Elemental ammo option]

 

Makeing ranger into a true specialist.
An item only ranger can use.


[Weapon coatings]

 

Allowing you to choose 1 of 5 ammo types

 

  • Fire
  • Poison
  • Ice
  • Electric
  • Blast

Thease ammo types can be selected

in the forge before mission launch,

 

Allowing the player to choose to eather be a primer or detonator on the field ultimately being the team's combo specialist.

 

This would allow ranger to be a class that specialazises in All damage as well as supporting the team, Allowing this jack of all traits, you, the player to adapt to there own
Playstyle.

 

 

[Also]

 

One more thing that I feel is worth mentioning is rangers melee ability what went wrong here...

 

we have not one but two masterwork components that focus on a close quarters ability that can only be used every 3 seconds and hits for next to nothing for damage not to mention trying to get that close with ranger in grandmaster is just asking for death,

 

Utterly a nightmare.

 

I personally feel like a last defense close quarters aoe attack would fit this suits playstyle much more efficiently,

 

A emp like electrical blast that arcs out in a dome like fashion ultimatly killing shields and detonating primed foes


This attack would allow are rangers to get close and personal efficiently like are fellow interceptor, a support buff would allow us to be as affective as colossus's shield, ammo types would give us just as much elemental playability as storms cast, and finally a damage buff would give us the single target sustain rangers were built for.

 

 

Any of thease four options,

 

  • Gernade set
  • Damage-support Perk
  • Ammo types
  • Close quarters AOE

I feel would significantly improve rangers playability in high teir play.

Once agian

I would like to point out rangers special and gear damage is miserable in higher tiers.
The damage just isint there,

 

 

But I think what I have brought to the table would ultimately fix this issue


Let's take rangers special for instance
Most of the time it requires the player to be at distance to line up a majority of the targets,
well add a 200% ranged damage buff as well as making it a detonator..
You have now just one shot a group of enemies storm previously froze,

 


But that's only one instance of an ongoing battle
Let's jump back in shall we.


Boom the blast goes off sounds fill the air as small chucks off ice and scar hit the ground
Your vision narrows as you get the first glimpse
Zam zaps of light bounce off your reflective lens, zing your targeting system dials in


Fire, flame, heat


you now notice a well aligned group to your right, sounds of scorching flesh as colossus's flame has just set them ablaze,


you have spark beam as your gear,
it now has the ability to detonate combos
On top of your 150% ranged damage buff.

 

you drag that beam of death across the entire group watching one by one engulf into unworthy dust


You are now one shot comboing the entire hoard but wait...


You've only just began


Sounds of sharing frost ring through your ears
storm just lit up another group, ice shards everywhere, freezing them all in a casket of winter breeze


You feel a section of your suit start to glow
A presence only a masterwork would offer
You feel this utter strength ingolf you,
Only one thing would have such power,


this vanguard badge buffing your melee damage, with pure bitter strength you whip out your baton taking one quick glimpse of disappointment tossing it aside,

 

with impressive soundwaveing speed you fly directly into the center of this frozen grave unleashing your true close quarters attack,

 

thrusting out your chest in a rage of pure power you unleash a devastating electrical EMP blast in a arcing dome around you combining your 30% melee damage and your 50% combo masterwork buffs you not only one shot the group but you now proc your legendary tip of the spear component blessing 40% armor to all allies,

 

boom colossus's mortars overhead, clashes of bullets, arms, weapons, bouncing off your friends shield,

 

you see him getting swarmed,

 

being a ranger there is no other option, you rush in to aid,

 

as you approach you feel a warmth overcome you a surge of power fills you, only building stronger the closer you approach,

 

your health and armor are now team distance buffed allowing you, ranger, of all javelins to now be standing side by side with colossus, for you are now truly a jack of all traits,

 

but wait why stop there,

 

you kill the swarm. Causing A moment of silence, wind rustles by calmnessly as the dust of overwhelmed enemies hit the ground, this, the calm before the storm,

 

bam massive sparks of light and rock snake off the cliffside massive explosions ring your ears, your caught in an ambush ,snipers shots sizing off the walls, there no time for warning your fellow ranger unfortunately takes a massive hit, unwilling falling behind a wall, hes okay for now, but can barely stand , with scar quickly approaching your left with few options,

 

you blindly reach into your side keeping an eye on your brethren , merely judging the distance it would take, click the ring of a grenade pulled. Now whizzing through the storm of bullets and shrapnel,


Tink tink this device bouncing ever so gracefully by your friend in need, poof like a nice firecracker bursting into medical supplies mending a once hurt team member into a fullhearted solder again, now raising his pulse beam and returning devastating fire,

 

while in the midst of you healing your fellow ranger, colossus a tank, has been holding the front line, massive wall like shield in hand, metal muscles tense, brace strong, its nice, but for how long,

 

crink, a crack forms in the might of this beasts handheld wall crink crink more cracks there quickly spidering, he cant take much more,

 

click another grenade pin pulled this one rolled ever so gracefully under colossus's feet friecrackaling into repair kits, restoring a once cracked shield into a presteen relic every freelancer would adore,

 

fire, ice, destruction,

 

the the battle rages on, lighting cracks, unearthly screams, bone chilling echoes carrying through, slowly dyeing down till every last charred ice riddled scar body hits the ground,


Silence.


calmness,


nothing but a word, is it over?


You Ranger


turning around in disbelief in these unfortunate actions, that's when you see it, the mist breaks, a lone shadow, a legendary approaches, charging the team,

 

as a ranger you chuckle at the sight, for he, this legendary foe is a mere straggler lost in the mist of battle, a smile forms as you hold out your arm, implanting your feet below you, bracing yourself for this unrighteous vengeance.

 

boom you let loose the avengers boon, a masterwork pulse blast at range for a 200% buff hitting dead on target causing a massive chunk to fall from your opponents health bar, making you a true single target destroyer,


You calmly stand,


letting the team clean up your scraps


Mission end, job well done,

 

 

ok let's mix it up abit after talking to a friend you convince him to go ranger with you,
one of you brings in fire rounds the other decided to try blast,

 

the first ranger charges into a group spraying fire ammo setting the group ablaze the second ranger comes in with a marksman rifle blasting the targets away combo after combo,

 

a legendary spawns in, the first ranger turns to face this new target

 

with a mere few shots this legendary is now on fire, the second jumps into the air and let's loose his pulse blast penetrating all armor and absolutely chunking the legendary with range/combo damage,

 

new scars enter the fight, showing up flying and spraying away, a random colossus now joins the instance ground slamming one out of the air hoarding him to himself

 

the first ranger turns his attention to another flying scar, setting a steady stream of rounds on target keeping this scar ablaze as the second ranger flys in, with no time to spare this ranger sticks out his chest letting lose an electrical blast emp forcing this unlucky scar to the ground, with no wasted time he pops off another pulse blast for the finishing touch,


One last group of elites spawn in surrounding what's left of the legendary the first ranger once again sets the crowd ablaze the second with now earning his special let's lose a range/combo special annihilating what's left of the group.

 

With the fight being now over, the second ranger has a moment of realization, if he were to bring fire rounds for his own weapon he can single target chunk anything he pleases, with gear combos of his own, for he now has true single target damage.

 

 

Jack of all traits they say,
That's the ranger I see.

 

But some might not agree with my thoughts so here's another prospective.

 

A second route you could take is focusing even more on single target sustain,

 

Getting rid of the grenade slot completely and adding another gear based weapon system,

 

After talking to a good friend of mine this is his vision for ranger,

"If we're talking a full tear down rework. Rangers Ult should lock onto 1 target by default, target select would use the aiming reticule, then holding the ADS button would widen your targeting radius if you want to hit multiple enemies. It should have high base ability recharge so it can rotate through its abilities rapidly. I would remove grenades and make that a rocket slot, then give the other slot his laser beams and charge burst weapons, making it easier to keep DPS up."

 

 

"Components would naturally focus on mostly increasing the effectiveness of his gear rotation and cooldowns as well as adding to his health and shields so we don't wind up with a second glass canon. Support abilities are fine as they are atm but I think all Javelins need a third support option for health."

 

 

"Sustain is all about constant damage, so you won't really get those nice big numbers everyone likes, but you would wind up pumping out much more damage over the course of a battle."

 

[My thoughts on his vision]


I for one personally agree with more beam weapons.

 

I want a health melter beam that lasts as long as colossus's flame.

 

And I fully agree replacing rangers gernades with a rocket gear slot is a very viable option

 

 


He continues to talk about how rangers combos would work,

"Rockets for the most part would be detonators, probably a default explosive set as base then have elemental options for those that like variety. Beams could then be long firing to proc status/setups. Energry burst weapons would be a combo of damage/element similar to how some of the Colossus mortars work."

 

[In conclusion]


I feel his vision for ranger would be extremely viable fit for our current javelin lineup.

I'm going to be making a post myself soon about this opinion a lot fo people seem to be reiterating.

 

Firstly I'll agree his Masterwork's are all over the place and it's awful.

 

I think a gun-master like javelin would destroy the fun of this class. Shooting a gun n a third person action looter game sounds horrific. I'm a ranger main and I'd honestly drop this spec in a heart beat if it changes to that. Anything that focuses SPECIFICALLY on gun damage would be awful, just to restate my feelings on this.

 

He needs a weapon damage overhaul, him being versatile is his identity and I love it. They need to implement better abilities attached to his masterwork. The ranger Is weak because his numbers just don't match the other's. 

 

If he was a true single target eating-monster I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't be complaining the Ranger needs a rework. It seems most Javelin's can handle enemies for the most with very little intervention from their team. I've found that the ranger has to really work to take an enemy out all by himself. You almost have to maintain like a sustained damage combo/rotation with your weapon load out. 

 

Before we go into re-working him into a meta sniper rifle/shotgun/heavy machine gun toting putz let's try buffing his damage to make it on par and fixing the masterworks. It will be awful to hear and see people say Ranger is only viable with Sniper Rifle/meta load out because his gun damage is so great but his abilities still suck.

 

I enjoy that you can build him to emulate the other javelin's and even a mix between the three, but they need to be implemented in a way that make's his viable. 

 

Also they need to fix some of his components. For example his grenade cool down component doesn't even work! I believe it's a 30% cooldown on grenades? My grenade cool down time is 7 seconds and even after having this equipped it's still 7 seconds.
