Multiplayer won’t work for Plants v Zombies GW1 xbox360

We have xbox360, a new Gold membership and are able to play Plants V Zombies with one player. Why will our syatem not allow us to play multiplayer? The prompt tells us we’re not connected to Xbox live yet it allows us to play one player live with no issues. We’re new to live gaming so hopefully it’s something small that we’re missing. Do we need to have 2 Xbox live. Gold memberships to play multiplayer? I sure hope not!
