1) in order to play against other players in PvP and public in backyard, do you need PS+?

2) how do you change the backyard from “public” to “private” and vice-versa?

You do need PS+ for anything online related. Also when you spawn as plant in giddy park, you’ll see to the left of the screen (if you spawn facing the portal) a globe that glows golden. There you can change from public to private. Hope this helps

does someone without ps+ miss much of the game without its membership
Have any idea how much fun one will have only with offline content? is it a predominantly PvP game

You can't even get past the title screen IF YOU DONT HAVE PS+.  This is a 100% ONLINE GAME.  The very first thing it does is connect to the servers.  YOU HAVE TO HAVE ONLINE SERVICES.
