[Solution] WINDOWS - Java issues step-by-step

Hello everyone,

 

We will try to assist you and help you with resolving this issue with Java that affects every program using Java and not only Pogo Games.

 

Here is a recap list of every step:

 

STEP 1. Uninstall previous Java installation. CLICK HERE

 

STEP 2. Install the latest version of Java Version 7, update 17. CLICK HERE

 

STEP 3. Enable Java in your browser. CLICK HERE

 

STEP 4. Test Java. CLICK HERE

 You need to remove all traces of the previous Java installations before attempting to install again.

 

To know why you need to remove older versions of Java, please check this article from Java official website: Why should I uninstall older versions of Java from my system?

 

Windows XP

 

  • Go to the Start menu
  • Click on Control Panel

  • Double-click on Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove all older versions of Java by selecting them from the menu and clicking on the Remove button.

Note: To check to see if you have the most recent version of Java and to find out which version is the most recent , please visit the Java Download site online. When you click download, the site will detect if you have the latest version of Java or not.


Windows Vista

 

  • Click the Start pearl
  • Click on Control Panel

  • Remove all older versions of Java by selecting them from the menu and clicking on the Remove button.

1. Go to http://java.com and click on the Free Java Download button.

 

Please note that the pictures below show an older version of Java.

2. Click on the Agree and start Free Download button and follow the instructions on your screen.

3.a If you are using Internet Explorer, click on  "Run" and follow the instructions on your screen.

Even if you have Java installed on your computer, it also needs to be enabled for your browser in order to function properly. If you are experiencing difficulties, make sure that Java is enabled. Here’s how:

Windows User


Mac Users

 


Windows User

All Windows Users should enable Java using this step first.

  1. Open your Java Control Panel using these steps:
  • Windows XP Users: Select Start > Control Panel > Java -- which should open up the Java Control Panel

  1. Select the Advanced Tab

  1. Under Debugging, select “Enable tracing” and “Enable logging”.
  2. Under Default Java for browsers, select “Microsoft Internet Explorer” and “Mozilla family”. (Make sure they have check marks)
  3. Select Apply
  4. Select OK


Once the first step of enabling Java Plug-in has completed, you will need to enable Java from within the browser you are using. Locate your browser(s) and follow the steps provided to continue enabling Java.

Firefox

  1. Select Tools > Options > Content

  3. Select Tools > Add-ons

  2. Select the Enable button located next to any Java Plug-in
  3. Go back to Pogo.com, refresh the page and try launching the game again. If you still encounter a problem, you may need to do a Clean Re-install of Java.


Internet Explorer

  1. Select Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab

  1. Select Safari > Preferences > Security

  4. Go back to Pogo.com, refresh the page and try launching the game again. If you still encounter a problem, you may need to do a Clean Re-install of Java.


Chrome, Firefox

  • Pogo.com only supports Safari on Mac computers. Please try the site on Safari.

At Pogo.com, our games run in pop-up windows, so if you have a pop-up blocker installed, you might have trouble playing our games. Fortunately, most pop-up blockers can be set to allow specific, trustworthy websites, like Pogo.com, to open pop-ups when they need to.

 

To test your browser for a pop-up blocker, just follow these instructions:

 
  1. Click this link: Test for pop-up blockers.
  2. After a few seconds, three small windows should pop up in the upper left corner of your computer screen.
  3. If neither window pops up, or if only one of them appears, then you have a pop-up blocker installed. To fix the problem, just follow the following instructions for turning off pop-up blockers (Click on "Spoiler" below)

Overview

At Pogo.com, our games and features use pop-up windows, so if you have a pop-up blocker installed, you might have trouble playing our games. Fortunately, most pop-up blockers can be set to allow specific, trustworthy websites, like Pogo.com, to open pop-ups when they need to.

 

Common problems caused by pop-up blockers

My game window never appears- Many of our games appear in pop-up windows, so if you click on "Play Now" and no window opens up, then you may have a pop-up blocker installed. Please note that if you click on a game and a window does open, but the game never appears in the new window, then the problem is probably with your Java plug-in. Once you have confirmed that your pop-up blocker has been disabled, you may want to run our Java plug-in test.

My table never appears- In some of our multi-player games (like Spades or Checkers), you need to join or set-up a table to play. If you click on the Play or Watch buttons, but no table window opens up, then you probably have a pop-up blocker installed.

I can't view player profiles- When you click on a player's name in chat, you will see an option to "See Profile." If, when you click on this link, no Player Profile window appears, then you probably have a pop-up blocker installed.

 

How to disable your pop-up blocker

Hold down the (CTRL), ALT, or SHIFT key

 

 

Many pop-up blockers can be temporarily disabled by holding down the Control (CTRL), ALT, or SHIFT key when you click a link. For example, before you click the Play Now button, hold down the Control, ALT, or Shift key. Be sure to continue to hold down the key until the pop-up window appears. To test if your pop-up blocker can be disabled this way, run the pop-up blocker test again, but this time, hold down the (CTRL), ALT, or SHIFT key.

If holding down these keys doesn't help...

 

 

There are many different pop-up blocker programs out there, and the directions for disabling each one are different. The following is a set of general instructions designed to show you where to start looking for your pop-up blocker. These instructions use Internet Explorer and Windows XP as an example, but many browsers are similar.

1. Check your internet browser's toolbar. Pop-up blockers are often visible there:

  • Go to the View menu at the top of your browser.
  • Under View you should see a menu option for Toolbars
  • Under Toolbars you should see options for Standard buttons and Address bar
  • If there are other toolbars listed that are checked, try disabling them by un-checking them and running the pop-up blocker test again.

 

2. Look in the "notification" area near your system clock.
Many popular internet security programs include pop-up blockers. These security programs often display a little icon by the clock in the corner of your computer screen. Double-click the little icon and look for any instructions regarding pop-up blockers. Each security program is very different, so you will need to consult your documentation for directions about how to disable these pop-up blockers. If you don't have this documentation, try checking their website for more information.

3. Consult your browser's help system
If the steps above don't work, we suggest consulting your browser's help system:

  • Go to the Help menu at the top of your browser (note that this is different from the Pogo help system which is a link in the web page).
  • Click Help and select the Contents and Index option
  • Search for the word "pop-up" or "popup"
  • If there are other toolbars listed that are checked, try disabling them by un-checking them and running the pop-up blocker test again.

 

Please note that site-specific disabling of the popup blocker will not work on Pogo. The popup blocker will need to be completely disabled in order to function correctly on Pogo.

 

  1. If both small windows pop up, then your pop-up blocker has been set correctly and you're ready to play!

If you see any of these messages, please follow the corresponding instructions.

 

1. Pop-up "Do you want to run this application?"

 

Due to security measures implemented in the latest version of Java (version 7 update 11) many Pogo Java games may be asking you permission to run before they load.

 

With a few quick mouse clicks you should be able to bypass these messages and prevent them from appearing in the future.

When you see a window that looks like this when loading a Pogo game:

 

 

Click on the “Do not show this again for this app” check-box on the bottom left and then hit the “Run” button. 

 

Note: that this may appear as many as 7 times the first time, and again once or twice on other Pogo games. Once you’eve gone through the process with all Pogo’s game types, you should not see the security warning window pop up again when you are on Pogo.

 

 

2. Pop-up "Pogo Games use Java. You need to install Java to play this game."

The Java plug-in is disabled. Java must be enabled to properly play Pogo game. Fur further instructions, please go back to STEP 3.

 

 

3. Message asking you to update the pluging

 

If you see a message asking you to update pluging (on Firefox):

  1. Go to the browser menu.
  2. Click on "Tools"
  3. Select "Add-ons

  1. Click on the Plugings tab
  2. Click on "Check to see if your pluging are up to date" and follow the instructions on your screen.
  3. Make sure Java is enabled

4. Pop-up "Application blocked by security Settings"

This pop-up appears because  the security level for Java is set to ‘Very High'.

 

This is the maximum level for version 7 update 11. You can change this setting if you wish to. This setting can be found by clicking on Java located in the 'Control Panel' tab security:

NOTE: We cannot recommend a specific setting for Java and we recommend to do this only if you know what the risks are.

 

5. Pop-up "Some plugins have been deactivated for your safety" (FIREFOX)

 

Due to new security measures in the Firefox browser, Firefox may have automatically disabled Java.

 

This prevents many Pogo games from running.  Fortunately there is a way to reactivate Java for Pogo.com specifically. To do this, you must set Pogo.com as a trusted site for the Java plugin.

 

To  activate Java for Pogo.com, first open a Pogo game that uses Java, such as Trivial Pursuit Daily 20.

 

You should see a special Firefox specific popup message like this:

 

If you don’t see this message, click the Red “Toy Brick” button on the top left of your address bar. (1.)

 

At the bottom of the popup, click the down arrow next to “Activate All Plugins”, and then click “Always activate plugins for this site. (2.)

 

The Java plugin for Pogo should now automatically run on pogo.com without further intervention. More info about this can be found on the Firefox support, or in the Pogo.com forums.
