So it increases their chance to be in the same group.

I agree with @HenryThePear below that there are not as many actual players as it used to be and also for them to join at the same time (that was the reason why sometimes when we click join there would only be 1 player -- we are playing against ourself)

Perhaps they assign folks to tournaments the way they do it for professional poker. Based on past experience, they know roughly how many people are going to olay. Players then get assigned to tables on a rotating basis. Player 1 goes to Table A, Player 2 to Table B, etc and so forth. This is done to prevent collusion.
