Why does my EA game Star Wars Squadrons keep asking to verify me?

★★★ Novice

I bought SW Squadrons via Steam back in 2020 and every time I try to play it recently it always tries to ask me to verify who I am....why, my Steam account and EA accounts are linked, yet it does not recognise who I am automatically and EA doesn't seem to know I own the game via Steam?

This is probably what is causing the other issue I am having with this game getting stuck at the verification screen.

Hi @oldfaartq

To confirm is this a windows prompt your see, or are you getting the prompt when signing into your EA account?

@EA_Illium It's the screen after the game tries to log in to the EA servers....

It is as if it doesn't recognise that I have a genuine game.

Hey @oldfaartq

Thanks for the screenshot, To confirm do you ever get a message to verify the game or does it sit trying to connect to EA servers?

Also to confirm which client do you play from?

@EA_Illium As per the other thread, it seems to always now end up with the blank grey screen in VR Mode trying to connect to the EA servers. Very occasionally in flat PC mode, non VR, it has actually shown up the verification options, although I couldn't select any of them and only once I was able to actually select something and verify my game and play the game. But every time after that it gets stuck at the verification screen with nothing but a grey screen with close in the top right hand corner.

It was purchased and launched from Steam.

I also purchased the EA play subscription from Steam as I play Battlefront II, Battlefield 4 & 2042 from Steam. In my EA app, the EA play games do appear in the library and are shown with Steam at the top of the their icons and allow me to launch them without verification.

Steam say it is an EA problem for not recognising that I purchased SW Squadrons from Steam.

Round and round in circles I go and |I am not able to play the game!

I have the same problem (and from what I have found so far on the web, so have many others).

Here's a detailed description:

My EA and Steam accounts are linked, yet every time I start the game via Steam, it doesn't remember my device as previously authenticated and thus asks for a verification code on EVERY launch... Or rather tries to, because that horribly bad implemeted ingame browser fails to render the verification form every single time in VR mode and sometimes (completely random) in regular mode as well.
In VR mode it just shows a black screen with the word "close" on the top right that is impossible to get past, as in VR mode that button doesn't react to any input device, probably because it was built only with normal mode in mind where a mouse is available and no one ever thought of what would happen in VR. So, VR mode is effectively unplayable because one cannot even get to the main menu.
In normal mode, it sometimes renders the verification form and sometimes not, completely at random. If not, it then either shows a plain grey area or a completely transparent one. At least in normal mode I can actually click on "close" when the form fails to render, but then I am not signed in of course.

When the form actually does show up, it cannot be interacted with via the mouse at all, so I have to use the tab key to navigate through it. And after I entered the verification code (the box "remember this device" is always checked of course), I am properly logged in, but the next time I start the game again, I have to verify once more (provided that crappy ingame browser overlay works that time, which as I said before is a complete gamble).

In my EA account overview under "Security", the list of trusted devices gets longer with every login, always adding a new device called "Steam" instead of recognizing that I am logging in from the same Steam account on the same machine as before. I imagine if the game would properly recognize the verified environment, it would skip that terribly implemented verification form popup on subsequent logins, but since it obviously can't, the whole login process is basically broken, making launching the game in VR completely impossible and incredibly annoying in normal mode.

This means that the only way I can actually launch the game in VR is to log in to my EA account in the browser, deactivate the login verification under "Security" (which of course is a big risk for my account's safety), start the game in VR and then reactivate the verification again when it is running.
That is completely unfeasible and also a big risk to my account's security.

I can honestly say that I am quite baffled on how this whole process was implemented. I have never seen such a terrible in-game login mechanism in my entire life, how could something as error prone or rather outright broken as this make it into the game? Did no one ever test this, even though it literally prevents the game from actually being starting properly?

Joke isn't it mate I get the same error or asking me to send a code to my phone but there's no way to click on anything the touch controllers are unresponsive on that grey screen and keyboard or xbox controller do nothing. So despite everything I heard you cannpot play this game in VR. what a joke lol. I* hate EA every time they have to ruin everything.

This VR business is more trouble than it is worth end up sweating my face off trying to get the game working in VR. same with microsoft flight simulator. You can control the pitch of the 3rd person plane but nothing else. Cannot even get inside the cockpit. I mignt stick to my Standalone VR games I think from now on.

Their 2FA is rubbish, so I disabled it and am now able to play the game in any mode. Not the most secure, but no other games ask for this before starting.
