LTD player expiration basis?

What is the expiration of the limited player based on?   Is it the number of games?  Length of time you have it?   

Just trying to figure out playing them vs not playing them.  If they are going to expire based on a time limit, then I need to put them in my roster.  Seems its like a contracts type basis though?

I almost prefer last years way of doing it instead.   Maybe if the usage was clear I would change my mind.
