So this may have just been dumb luck. I've been following the game for several months now, waiting for that golden (green) ticket (install button) and checking pretty much daily. After going through the Playstore and seeing the red banner of shame, I went to Google more info. Scrolling down I see a standard Google Playstore advert for the game I just searched (this one). Only thing different is there's an install button! Clicked it, installed, and verified my email. Boom, on to the Aplha with "closed registration".
Tldr:
Couldn't install app through Playstore, but appeared to circumvent the process via Google directly.
I attempted to recreate my scenario, but since I'm as already registered/linked it won't let me.
Edit: recreated this bug via my wifes phone.
