Choices for the Hungry Deserter in Dragon Age Keep aren't right.

★★★ Newbie

There are 8 outcomes to this quest, not to mention an issue involving a glitch. And dragon age keep only lists 6 outcomes and 2 of them aren't even possible.

The 8 possible outcomes are as follows; with the possible options shown in dragon age keep marked with an underline

  1. Don't help the deserter and leave him to his fate.
  2. Help the deserter by giving him food
    1. Steal food from the guard.
    2. Persuade the guard for the food
    3. Pay the guard for the food
  3. Give the deserter food in exchange for the key
    1. Steal food from the guard.
    2. Persuade the guard for the food
    3. Pay the guard for the food
  4. Kill the deserter and take the key

The 2 option listed in dragon age keep that are not possible are

  1. Kill the deserter outright with out obtaining the key
  2. Steal the key from the deserter while leaving him to his fate

The Keep is not stating "Kill the deserter outright with out obtaining the key" but only "Ostagar prisoner killed" and you can do that with any character depending on your dialogue choices. (You always get the key this way.)

You also can steel the key if your character is a Rogue, so all options the Keep outlines are indeed possible.

The Keep also outlines in only one outcomes that you got the key. So if you get the key in any of the other choices you made is not really of interest.

Ok, I can accept the part about killing the deserter then. But I've tried stealing the key as a rouge using the pickpocket skill butt it always says "Nothing to steal"

It has been a long long time since I played DAO as a Rouge.
Did the prisoner already admit to having the key when you tried to steal it?

I've tried both before and after he admitted to having the key.

Hero

In the end, I don't think this choice is reflected in Inquisition, so it doesn't really matter. I've noticed a few inconsistencies in the Keep that don't affect Inquisition, but maybe they'll have another look at those if the next game is affected by those decisions.

Not related to the keep, but there are no consequences in DA2 either, if I remember correctly.
