command and conquer remastered broke my sound

was playing yesterday, i saved and quit as normal... windows had no sound from that point, after a restart.. still no sound, decided to open the game again and retrace, I get this error

unable to initialize windows audio. Xaudio2 CreateMasteringvoice[] 0x80040154.

audio drivers are up to date according to windows and the devices are enabled. I only have the onboard speakers so cant switch devices

good to know that exists, had to make the PC reinstall the drivers to fix the windows sound isue, no had a chance to check if its cleared this error up. i did check directX and it wasn't finding any errors.
