I have Battlefield 2 on windows 10, I really want to play Forgotten Hope 2 and project reality. However I can't even start the game normally. This is so frustrating because I had the same exact issue trying to play BF1942, Install the game and everything like that works fine. However when I go to play the game it starts up with a black screen as if it is loading then all of a sudden it just closes back to the desktop and with no error code as well. Happened on BF1942 and I couldn't figure out a solution and now its happening when I'm trying to play Battlefield 2. I've searched for hours on end and I just can't figure it out... I've seen people posting links to a solution on Battle Log but of course the links don't work as they have been shut down. If any one has any possible solutions please let me know,, Im on a kinda crappy HP Notebook 2016 but it can run Fallout NV on ultra and Day of infamy just fine as well as other modern games so I don't think its any system limitations. I'm at the end of the rope here, don't know what to do. Thanks.

the bf1942 main menu can only run on 800 x 600 resolution so you need have that resolution on your screen.
but when the game is running you can change to any screen resolution thats supported by your screen.
you see when you start a game and start loading a map blackscreen.exe run for a few seconds and change the game to resolution you set in the video settings.
the only thing i still can think of is to use the hdmi port on your laptop and plug in a monitor that support the screen resolutions you need
and this is the point were i run out of ideas maybe team simple tech forum can help you

first download my all in 1 patch up pack for cd rom version
https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B7cGjW31oHh8eEFHdG1JNzhLeUU&export=download
install all patches also the gamespy patch inside that pack.
2 now we need to turn on DirectPlay bf1942 use it
see this video

3 turn off all screen overlays they can make for weird bugs in bf1942
like the Xbox Game DVR see video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU6DFUgBE4g this is on win 10

So I've tried with mine but nothing seems to be working properly, I don't know if it's my game or product key I even tried calling EA support about it and they couldn't figure it out. I saw you posted a link to a free Battlefield 1942 download on another forum so I'm gonna try that one.. would the steps to patching still be the same as this?
This is me FPS by the way, I think I accidentally logged onto a old account but yeah its me lol

the free version of bf1942 is fully patched up so no need to download my patch up pack all you need is the gamespy patch to get the game to work online again.
http://team-simple.org/download/
but you still have to turn on DirectPlay and turn off all screen overlays programs like the Xbox Game DVR
after that the free version should run

this is a rare problem in bf1942 i have looked around the bf1942 community forums and i found maybe a solution.
i need to know whats the lowest screen resolution you can set on windows ? do you have 800 x 600 ?
if dont have 800 x 600 bf1942 cant run the main menu is in 800 x 600 60hz.
but maybe on your intel hd graphics you can set a Custom Resolution see this video and site.

i found this problem on team simple forum on this topic.

Yeah the lowest my resolution goes is 1021x768, I'll try some of the other things you suggested. Thanks so much for all your responses, you're the best around here man.
side note. Do you know if it is somehow possible to edit the required resolution for the game to make it match my normal display?
also i just tried the custom resolution in the Intel settings... it worked! but only so far... The game launched fine brought me to main menu everything just fine but then when i try to start a game it just freezes when i click start. I can hear the theme playing but it doesn't load. Tried messing around with the in game resolution and graphic options as well and also keeps freezing..
