There is a problem with having to call EA for the key... if it's free the key should no longer be required, period, and all checks against should be completely removed.
The registry edit option doesn't work because there's no registry key in there!
And without a registry key that SHOULD be in there the ereg software is useuless.

I'm getting this issue after installing today and running repair as well. Something needs to be done about this.

This is stupid. The 'repair' doesn't help at all. The game is free wtf do you need a cd key for.

Could you please try the following:
Reload your games library by clicking the reload icon in the top left corner or select Reload my Games from the main Origin menu. Then right-click Battlefield 1942 and select Repair Install once again.
Please let us know if that helps.
