If it had happened once or twice, it wouldn't matter, but absolutely every single solitary time Origin tries to install an update, it fails out giving the unhelpful message "the installer encountered an error", the error code 10:0, and then to add insult to injury locks the install files so I can't reinstall the client or uninstall what's there.
When I try to run Origin again, I get an error that Windows cannot access the file or that I don't have appropriate permissions (see attached). This happens even when I explicitly navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\Origin.exe and run as administrator.
Inevitably, I have to shut down whatever else I'm doing and reboot the system, just to be able to update Origin Client. It's getting to the point where I don't even want to launch it anymore because I'm going to have to waste a half hour fixing the mess before I can play my game, and by then I don't want to play it anymore.

First, disable your antivirus and firewall temporarily and then perform a clean boot before starting Origin:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
If the issue continues at that point then manually uninstall Origin using the specific steps here: https://help.ea.com/en/help/origin/origin/manually-uninstalling-origin/
Reboot and then download the most recent installer from here: https://www.origin.com/irl/en-us/store/download
Run the Origin installer and then retest again. Do let us know how you get on, thanks.

Well, I did what I always had to do -- rebooted the machine so I could d/l and reinstall the client, so it's up and running. Disabling my firewall and antivirus was not necessary and never has been, and isn't something that's going to happen anyway.
The point is that this is not really a fix -- if Origin updater always fails, that's a problem that needs more than a workaround.
