Best workaround :
Disable Client Service & Origin Web Helper Service. You can also do this via listed clean boot steps.
Just disable and restart origin (if u have it running) and it should work.

This is how I fixed it for now based on a different post.
another user was given a link to an older version of origin & installing this one seems to work for me! just make sure your automatic updates are off until ea fixes whatever they’ve done.

Not in the game yet, but doing what you said I have gotten a step further.
Origin is such garbage.
No other game launcher I have ever gone through so many hoops to get it working. Steam, Blizzard app - everything else on the market just works.
I unsubcribed to EA Acces... then resubscribed hoping this crappy 'need windows permission to update' bug was squashed.
Nothing had changed, nothing had helped.. I stumbled upon this 8 page long thread and thank the lord you had input.. because EA support has been less than hopeless.

I had this same issue. After reading through many 'possible' fixes and attempting many of them, I was able to fix my issue by doing the following in order:
Open 'Origin client' and disable auto-update for game and client.
Open Msconfig --> then disable services "Origin client service" and 'Origin Web Helper Service".
Restart PC.
Disable and close Malware Bytes software.
Start Origin and wait (client has been extremely slow)
Repair game (Star Wars: Fallen Order for me) and wait
Once game was repaired... wait
After these steps I was able to finally update the game and play.
*note I did NOT perform a clean boot or need to adjust administrator settings.
Hopefully this will help others who have had similar issues, and hopefully this issue will be fixed across the client soon. Very frustrating.

Ok So.. this worked for day one.
Now need to go through the process for the next game to update.
@Straatford87can some of your goons look further into this?????
