Can I change the directory for the save files of games?

★★★ Newbie

I had both directory options set for a folder in my D drive for example, yet all the game's save files are stil going to an EA folder in my C drive documents folder. Can I not change that?

@SnappGamez While you cannot change your save directory, you can set windows to store user profiles on another drive instead of C: which will automatically mean sim saves are on that other directory.  It is a little tricky and not recommended but if you are certain that it is what you want then you can try the steps below but be warned that this will affect more than the Sims save files.

  1. Open File Explorer.

  2. Click Quick Access if it isn’t open.

  3. Click the user folder that you want to change to select it.

  4. Click the Home tab on the Ribbon.

  5. In the Open section, click Properties.

  6. In the Folder Properties window, click the Location tab.

  7. Click Move.

  8. Browse to the new location you want to use for this folder.

  9. Click Select Folder.

  10. Click OK.

  11. Click Yes and wait for the files to be moved to the new location

  12. Close File Explorer.

You cannot change the saves location in Origin client. Some games may have an option to change the directory in the in game menu, but most games save to the Documents folder.

What about on a Mac?  I have the game on an external drive, but I just realized that all my saved files are on my computer drive.  I moved them to the external drive, kept the pathway name the same, ie documents/electronic arts/sims 4, but it will still not open my saved games or save them in the right place

@EA_Darko Then why is there an option to save games in a different location?

@jregalad You can save where the main game saves however other files such as mods, saves and tray folders automatically save on the C: drive. The actually game saves wherever you decide to save it, such as I have mine on the D: drive, but sadly I haven't found a way to store mods ect. along with the game files
