Origin using HTTPS for Downloads

[ Edited ]
★★★★★ Newbie

Hi, I'm one of the contributors to the LANCache project. We provide a free, open-source,  solution to LAN parties, gaming events, cybercafes and similar to allow them to cache game updates in-order to save bandwidth. The solution has been a subject of a Linus Tech Tips video and is used at almost every gaming event globally.

We've had it reported to us today that Origin has switched to HTTPS for downloads. This has broken caching of downloads for all Origin games.

We've previously worked with Epic, Steam and Riot to ensure their games can be cached, and encourage your team to read our advice to publishers and contact us so we can find a solution that works.

If you could switch it back to HTTP, that would be ideal, but if your tech team want to chat about it - please get in touch.

EA DICE Team

Hey all,

This functionality is now available for you. Apologies for the delays!

We're still making some final changes so keep in mind:

  • Functionality is currently only working via individual game downloads
  • Full functionality via the Application Settings menu will be added at a later time
  • Some localization isn't available yet, meaning you might see some missing menu text

We wanted to make sure to have this available for all your upcoming LAN parties, so please keep us updated how it's working for you.

Thank you,

I suspect this is also related to the current Mac Origin issues. The logs people are posting are suggesting SSL handshake issues - might be worth turning off SSL for Origin downloads and rolling back this change.

LANCACHE - Origin now downloading over https not http

★★★ Apprentice

Early this week Origin switched from http to https and our LANCACHE Server are no longer helping LAN-CENTERS / LAN-EVENTS Around the world for caching game updates and saving bandwidth to your servers also and speeding up updates at the LAN-EVENTS.

We have with Riot, Steam, Blizzard and even Epic. we are not trying to work with Origin to get this back and working once more.

Thanks

LANCache no longer working with Origin PC client

★★ Novice

Hi,

I run the technical side of a few gaming events and a gaming center and utilize HTTP caching to store updates locally so we don't waste bandwidth between tens to hundreds of computers over a single internet connection.

It seems the latest version of Origin switched to HTTPS requests which we cannot cache effectively.

Other companies have kept their CDN's working over HTTP, I am hoping EA can do the same. Riot/League of Legends detects if the CDN IP is an RFC1918 address and it falls back to HTTP if so. They have recently changed their system to download a secure hash manifest over HTTPS first, just to guarantee the files are not tampered with. This should remedy any security problems.

Is there any way this request can make it up the chain and get a solution in place?

If I can help in any way - please reach out.

Thanks,

-Greg
