Need for speed rivals optimization content

Hi, so I bought need for speed rivals for Xbox 360. I installed it as requested and then it asks something like "a further 1.6g optimizational file is required to play the game" etc etc so I click ok, click on my internal storage which still has 2.8 gig free and it says "error, this can only be installed to a hard drive. Please select another storage" or some such.
To pre-empt what I've been reading:
No this is not the Xbox slim 4gb console.
No I am not installing this to a USB.
No I don't have an external hard drive, just the internal (and don't see why I should buy one)
Yes the initial installation was fine with no errors.
No the disc is not scratched.

It is probable that some more space is required to unpack/decompress that download, try aiming for 3.2GB or more free space and retry.
