That is strange...
But who cares as long as it runs.

I know this is OLD by I just recently but following these instructions solved the problem for me.

No, to me YOUR theory is wrong. I have copies of Mass Effect 2 on both Origin and Steam. My Origin copy? The game crashes. My Steam copy? The game doesn't crash. And I have a fairly updated machine. Windows 10, i7 core. Keep in mind that when Origin boots up, even if you installed the game on Steam, it will still want to apply and update to ME2. Which means when you start up ME2 on Steam, you will be running it WITH the updated files installed from Origin. That is the reason why you may get the same crash through Steam that you get through Origin. You can run the game fine through Steam WITHOUT running Origin in the background. I've done it and it runs fine.

If you install the game with both clients you set yourself up for any kind of error. (Registry mismatch, Data errors because the file structure is different in Steam and Origin.)
So, that is never a good idea.

I never installed it on Origin, only Steam. Origin detected that I have the game on my computer and automatically started to update it, which I cancelled.

That was a good idea. The update could have, as you stated, damaged your Steam installation.

It seems to me that whatever the Origin update does, it messes up the game in general, especially this specific DLC, because in the Steam and hard copy versions that I have; I've never encountered this error. The Illium crash, well that was in there since the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC, so the borderless window work around is a good one.
