In binaries directory:
Rename MassEffect2.exe as MassEffect2Launcher.exe
Rename ME2Game.exe as MassEffect2.exe
Now It Works fine and it can import Mass Effect 1 saves.
Hope work for everyone.
This has also worked for me! Thank you so much!

Hey minedcheetah0,
Yes, I too experienced that Origin is redownloading and replacing files that you try to rename.
This is "working as intended".
What you need to do is click the Windows Startbutton.
Select "run" (or type "run")
enter "regedit"
in this terrible tree of lines, navigate to "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\BioWare\Mass Effect 2\" (Win7 64)
Here, the value "path" {i.e. [install path]\Mass Effect 2\]} NEEDS to have the "\" at the end.
Because, whenever you start the ME2 config utility, it will DELETE said "\" from your registry.
Which makes ME2 unusable.
As someone pointed out in another thread, you could simply start ME2 be double-clicking the "ME2Game.exe" file.
But I think this is equivalent to short-wiring your your otherwise perfectly fine luxury car.
Origin needs to work as intended (i.e. launching ME2 from the Origin browser) and not require its users to manually fix their registries.
With a Mercedes, you might visit any repair shop to get your faulty ignition fixed, with the "Origin" client , we can't.

Right-clicking on the repair option for the installation within Origin seems to have fixed it as well. I assume the repair option corrects the registry info as well.

I know this is an old post but this helped so much. Thanks man!

I love you!
October 2016
2 days now, I've tried everything in this thread and more.
I am at the point now where the only thing I can think of is a crack.
No "solution" I've seen so far has solved my problem, ME2 refuses to launch.
I have both ME1 and ME2 in their original disk release and they both ran perfectly on multiple computers until last week.
Built a new computer, reinstalled the games and I get a message saying the activation limit has been reached.
Contact EA support and they tell me the only thing I can do is add my game codes to Origin and now nothing works.

To clarify,
you've installed ME2 from disk and want it to start, but you can't activate it no longer.
And you don't use Origin.
Or,
Do you use Origin and can't add your ME2 serial to Origin?
What OS are you running?
