Mass Effect 2 Won't launch

[ Edited ]
★★★ Novice

I bought the trilogy a little while ago, and have since finished the first game. However when I go to start the second game nothing happens. In task manager, the ACTIVATION UI program runs for a few seconds than disappears. I have tried reinstalling to no avail. I tried another solution from another post, about renaming the application files, again nothing happens.

PLEASE HELP!!

@Chee5e213

Forgive the late reply I'm pretty busy in the moment.

After renaming the game files could not solve the problem, it is likely that the update problem (or rather deeper lying problems with Windows hinted at by the update problem) is also responsible for the problem with the ActivationUI.exe.

First make a backup of your important data if you not have already done so.

Go here and select "Update now"

This will initiate the Windows update process again.

Please create a DxDiag in text file format, also go to your Reliability monitor (Press the windows key and "R" at the same time and copy or type "perfmon /rel" (without the quotes) in > ENTER and look if it has ME2 entries.

If yes double click at the last one, copy it to the clipboard, (Bottom left corner) save it to a text file and load it up together with the DxDiag. You can do that with the "choose file" button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

@Chee5e213

Your Windows is still on build Build 14393, did you intentionally block the Creators update?

Regarding your OP I assume that you already tried this?

"Rename "MassEffect2.exe" to "MassEffect2Launcher.exe" > Rename "ME2Game.exe" to "MassEffect2.exe"?

If so, clear your Origin cache.

All settings in Origin (only in Origin not in the games) are back to default settings after this.)

    - close Origin completely. (right click on the Origin symbol in the task bar > close)
    - Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
    - Type or copy  "%ProgramData%/Origin" (without quotes) > hit ENTER
    - Delete all the files and folders in the Origin folder, except for the "LocalContent" folder. (The "LocalContent" folder must remain untouched.)

    - Delete the "Mass Effect 2" folder in the "LocalContent" folder.
    - Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
    - Type or copy "%AppData%" (without quotes)  > hit ENTER
    - Now your Windows explorer should have brought you to your "C:\Users\>your user name<\AppData\Roaming" folder
    - Delete the "Origin"  folder inside the "Roaming" folder
    - In the address bar of your Windows explorer click on the word "AppData".
    - Open the "Local" folder
    - Delete the "Origin"  folder inside the  "Local" folder

    - Delete the "ActivationUI.exe" at  "D:\Games\Origin\Mass Effect 2\Binaries\Core"
    - Restart your PC. > in the Origin Game Library right click ME2 > repair > test

I went through these steps twice. After the first time I reinstalled the game and repeated the process. The game still isn't launching.

OK, try to create a exception for the "ActivationUI.exe" in the windows firewall, here is a description how to allow a program to communicate through the firewall.

Reboot after you created the exception > test.

Additional, do you use any mods?

Did you altered any game files?

What region are you in?

Again the same thing happens.

No, apart from the extra content that the game comes with.

Not that I am aware of.

I am from Australia.

Again, your Windows is still on build Build 14393, did you intentionally block the Creators update?

Run the Windows System File Checker Sfc /scannnow and post the concluding message.

Try to start Origin and the "MassEffect2.exe"as Administrator.

If that don't helps, create a new Windows user account (Administrator) > reboot > logon to the new account > Test.

About the Windows update; I'm not sure, is there a way to check?

Re: Mass Effect 2 Won't launch

@Chee5e213

That's a nice overview of what SFC /scannow can do, but I knew that already. Wink

Here a is step by step guide:

  • Press the Windows key and "X" at the same time.
  • Choose "Command prompt (Administrator)"
  • At the command prompt > typ "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes) > hit ENTER.
  • Post the final message.

As for the Update:

  • Press the windows key and "I" at the same time  > update & security > Details > look if there are update-failures.

Did you tried the new Windows user Account?
