Reinstalling the game didn't work so I'm going to try the permissions, but I don't know what I am looking for.

If you don't want it to affect your laptop. Change the program settings of Mass effect 2 itself in the program settings tab. 


Go to Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings, select Masseffect2.exe and then switching the Preferred graphics processor to the

'High-Performance NVIDIA processor'


That should avoid it affecting your laptops other applications.
