DLC crashing

[ Edited ]
★ Novice

Hi, I have a problem with a DLC mission Stealing Memory (Kasumi). I can complete the whole mission, however, in the mission summary, when I click "Exit" and want to continue, the game just crashes. Tried it many times, without any change. I tried to change all the graphics settings, becouse in some cases of those crashes it helped - without success in this case. I also tried "Repair install" tool in Origin, which didn't find any errors or corrupted files. Any advices?

I managed to get past it just now! Happy guy here.

What I did was a complete new install. I uninstalled it with Revo uninstaller to get all the files away (there are some files that isn't in the mass effect 2 folder that need to go away aswell to make it all go away.) So if you download a trial and use it for that, then you will be fine.

After I installed ME2 from disks (if you have the physical edition). Then updated it as usual. But I didn't install/download the DLCs from Origin, I stopped all the downloads and removed them as soon as they started. Instead I went to https://social.bioware.com/user_entitlements.php and downloaded all the installers there instead. I installed them 1 by 1 and sometimes windows said "Is this program installed properly?" just press the reinstall button (if you are using Windows 7 that is, otherwise it would show.) After all is done, then you probably will get this when you try to start the game "awc.dll failed to load" and you can't start the game. Just do a repair of ME2 (not the dlcs) and wait for it to finnish, then you are done. But I also did the "-nomoviestartup" shortcut and launched from there, just to be safe.

Summarise:

  1. Uninstall with revo uninstaller (or similiar programs) to remove all the files for me2
  2. Install everything from the CD (or download from origin if you don't have the physical edition)
  3. Stop all the dlcs from download via origin.
  4. download all DLCs from https://social.bioware.com/user_entitlements.php
  5. install DLCs via the installers you downloaded in step 4. If promted by windows "This program might not have been installed correctly" press "Reinstall using recommended settings"
  6. Make a shortcut from Masseffect2.exe in the Binaries folder of your mass effect 2 folder. Add in target the parameter "-nomoviestartup" without the quoatation marks " and after \MassEffect2.exe" so in the end it will look like this at the end: "\Binaries\MassEffect2.exe" -nomoviestartup (just so it is right)
  7. If "awc.dll failed to load" comes up, just go into origin and right click on Mass Effect 2 and press repair.
  8. Play and hopefully it will work.

I continued playing since my last post. ignoring the loyalty mission so I had to redo the whole mission.

Good Luck!

Hi! I also have the same problem, checked on the old bioware forum. There is a thread http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/106/index/2452757 that have 1 kind of fix. Though this didn't work for me.

I also just contacted support and they fowarded it to the game specialists, when they have an answer / fix for the problem, that I don't know.

The fix in that thread is that you make a shortcut fromt he Masseffect2.exe file and add a parameter in the "target" box and the end, then you add "-nomoviestartup" without the ". But as I stated, it doesn't work for me. Hope it works for you though! I don't know why it doesn't work though I have a hunch, it may be origin that is bypass my "shortcut" so the parameters isn't set. And you edit the game in origin like you can in steam. I can't post in the Mass Effect 2 forums on the bioware site since my account doesn't have mass effect 2 and I get register it, because I bought the trilogy edition.

Hope it works. Please write back either way.

Thanks for answer. Well, I found that one too, however, I made some mistake when I was copying that into the target box. Before I wasn't even able to do it. Now it's ok to do it, but I'm still not sure if it works and I assume that's not going to happen since I also have the trilogy edition from origin store. I can't try it right now, becouse I don't know what happened to my quicksave, where I was just about to end the mission and now I don't have time to play the whole mission again becouse of school. Sorry for that, I'll let you know in week or two hopefully, if I'd have some time to play.

So I finally started this mission again, just with the upgraded shortcut target box (-nomoviestartup) and it worked just fine for me this time. I didn't even need to reinstall it all as you did. Guess I made some stupid mistake when I tried it for the first time. I just hope ME3 isn't also that problematic - it's a bit sad how everything works fine on consoles and PC players have to deal with all types of problems and the official support doesn't care much about it. I'm glad the community is always helpful. Once again, thanks for help and feedback!

You know what you all missed an important point here. Just scan system files for over-written/ replaced files. There is a tool in Windows- called as System File Checker which does the operation in minutes.

1. Insert Windows installation disc.

2. Click Start, point to All Programs | Accessories.

3. Right click Command Prompt, select Run as administrator.

4. Type the following command and press ENTER:

SFC /SCANNOW

5. Reboot your machine.

After finishing above steps, do scan for problems with PCFresher. I hope your crashes will be fixed asap.

If people (like me) have the same issue and land here via google, please note that the -nomoviestartup fix does only work this easily when using steam. If you are running Mass Effect 2 with the Origin DRM please refer to this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/masseffect/comments/33etqa/origin_fix_for_nomoviestartup_command/ this worked perfectly fine for me. If you altered the sku to change your game language, this might be changed back to the default and you will have to change it again after the fact. After finishing the mission and exiting the debriefing screen without crash (hopefully) feel free to revert all the .exes to their original names.
