Hey @hatsplace
You should be able to do it simply by starting a new game in ME2. The game should give you an option to import ME1 Character.
Let us know if you encounter any issues with the import.

Unless you're on PC, in which case a few extra steps are required.
If you're on console, it should be straight from the game as @EA_Ataashi suggests. If the import option is not available, try replaying the final boss of Mass Effect 1.
