I bought a copy of the old Mass Effect 1 from Amazon.
It installed fine except it did not accept the code key
that came with the box. It keeps telling me to verify ownership, etc..
An hour of searching various "help" links was in vain,
I tried calling the Stateside help number only to be referred
by voice mail back to the worthless online help section..
How do I get this fixed please?
This version says "Bioware" NOT Origin,
Everything looks new & original.
Help!!??

I'd recommend contacting an EA Game Advisor and explaining your situation.
EA -- Contact Us: https://help.ea.com/contact-us
Before a contact method becomes available you'll need to provide the following information:
--> Product
--> Category
--> Platform

I'd also recommend you to create an account on http://www.pogo.com/ and then link it to your EA account as EA Classic Persona on https://profile.ea.com
Pogo is the easiest (and probably the last available) option to create an EA Classic persona which is used for Mass Effect 1 registration.
After that you can try to activate the game using this link : https://activate.ea.com/gameactivation.do?locale=en_EN
If it doesn't help, contact EA support as sundance31us recommended. They will definitely ask you to do the register and link the Pogo account so this can save you some time.
Good luck!
P.S.: You can also get a free Bring Down the Sky DLC for Mass Effect. To do this read this article: https://help.ea.com/article/mass-effect-bring-down-the-sky-dlc-redemption
