Unfortunately this has happened for a long time... I have had the same issue this year as well as many previous seasons.
Due to all the issues with the game I stopped playing for about 3 months this year. Since coming back I don't approach the as competitively and I don't spend big.
I just put the best team I can and occasionally buy a pack or something. It still sux when I get EAd but it's not as bad as when I had a top tier team and losing to teams 600-1000 power less or teams 15 lower ovr.
Way I see it ea doesn't want me to spend, otherwise why would higher teams struggle with bad teams in overdrive and l vs l
