Confused about upgrades

Okay I have maxed out players like Joe Montana at a 92. But I see the same card upgraded to a 96 with blue letters. How do I upgrade him to get more than 92 I don't know how to get the blue letters upgrade

Sounds like it's a different version of Joe Montana. Can you toss in a screenshot of the one you have and the one you want? You can evolve certain players, while others will have to either be acquired from the auction house or earned from set progression.
