Campus Hero Ray Lewis

Can I put my campus Hero Ray Lewis that I am upgrading through the event and sets in my current line up and train him wirhout making him unusable in the sets. I know once you train a player you can't do some things with him after that. Will I still be able to upgrade my Ray Lewis thru the campus Hero set if I train him up? I currently have the 115 Ray Lewis. Will I be able to use him to get the 118 day lewis if I train him.

It makes no sense to train him if your going to use him for the sets. In my opinion it's a waste of training points.
