Do I have to have ea access to play Madden 18 online

No, EA Access is not a requirement.

If you are on an XB1, you will need to be over 13 yrs old, have an XBL Gold Subscription and online connectivity.

I have all of that and it still says I need to connect to ea servers but I don’t know how to do that.

If you still can't connect after those steps, try logging to our Help site at Help.EA.com using your Xbox credentials. Once logged in, try restarting your Xbox and try again.

Double-check that the Xbox Live Gold membership is being shared to your Gamertag on the console if it's not the Gamertag that has the Xbox Live Gold membership linked to it.
