Defeat Rainbow Guardian

My 9 year old son is trying to defeat the Rainbow Guardian.  He has tried almost every new character and some old characters.  He has been unable to beat the Rainbow Guardian, has not even come close.  He has played as IMPs to beat the regular Guardians (Red, Yellow, Green, & Blue), but it does not work for the Rainbow Guardian.  He already knows to jump around and dodge bullets the Rainbow Guardian shoots.  Is there any other character you suggest?  Any tips or tricks?  Thank you.
