SBMM must exist in SOME degree, period. I don't care who you are, but nobody likes joining a game and getting steamrolled over and over and over and over. It drives players away whether you want to admit it or not, people by nature dont play games that are too difficult.
That said, whatever has recently changed has been significant. I know it was allegedly introduced with the beginning of the season but I saw nearly no effects of that until about 3 weeks ago. About 3 weeks ago, I started to actually get paired with people that I could actually freaking hit instead of running around finding relatively good loot just to get wrecked in 0.3 seconds of an encounter to a 20 kill / 4k damage badge player with 20k+ kills. Whatever tweaks were put in place felt like relief to me, because I was tired of "polishing my craphole" for the next one and the next one. About this same time is when everyone whom I consider better than me started complaining that they were getting put with more difficult people.
So, whatever changes were put in place made it easier for the average idiot like me to enjoy the game and actually get some damage. I started to average 3-7 kills a game and got a couple games with over 1000 damage, which was very new to me. I also did not feel like I was absolutely dominating my opponent however, I felt like most of the fights were pretty fair. That has since disappeared, I suspect due to the immense amount of people who are used to running around dominating noobs all day (seriously guys, what fun is that really?) complaining that they actually had to fight fair opponents. Not everyone is blessed with pristine hand-eye coordination, 17 hours a day in front of a computer monitor and people paying your rent because you can kill 20 n00bs in 1 round on camera.
Yes, there is a ranked mode. This was the alleged first iteration of skill based match making. Ranked mode doesn't seem anything like that to me, since everyone basically started from the bottom, now my whole team getting f***ed in the rear. I have said from day one that having two separated ques will destroy a game. You split your player base by doing this. There needs to either be all ranked or no ranked. By introducing SBMM to the level it was at 3 weeks ago, you indirectly did this.
SBMM is a tricky object to insert. "Skill" is a term that is defined very differently by different people. A true skill based match making system is not determined by one metric, or even two or three. A real SBMM system needs to have deep data analytics performed to things like footstep sound played, player responded 37 ms later... oh wait, footsteps dont play half the time so bad example... here, a bullet hit the player, it took them 3.7 seconds to spin around and return fire (instead of cat-like instincts of the popular streamers that do it in bot-like response time). Play style needs to be included. Do the players tend to like to play passive or aggressive, and match a good combination of the two in each round. You also need to consider the overall playtime of the player. As mentioned in this post, its also really frustrating when you've been playing since the day of launch and get paired with 2 people who don't even know where train yard is. Things like time alive per round, heals/shields replenished per round, time spent in combat per round, and tons and tons and tons of other things need to be factored in to execute a real "skill based" match making. KD ratio can be used but must be used with caution because look at all the smurf accounts that have appeared in recent time (so they can continue to wreck n00bs endlessly for some kind of sick pleasure).
People are confusing what skill really means. To me, skill is not running around a map killing 20+ people who stand absolutely zero chance in even hitting you with your perfect hand-eye coordination and bot-like reflex jump spin turn arounds and insane strafe bullet avoidance. Skill is about being against someone who can do things similarly to you and you coming out on top.
Just my two cents. This'll probably spark a lot of flame and maybe even get me a little break from here, so good luck.

@SombrePerditionI sucked in old casual but atleast had fun, being stuck in SBMM had made it alot harder to even get a single kill half the time and theres just no way to goof off or do anything fun anymore without getting , SBMM is a failure, I never have had over 10 kills even in old casual, SBMM was helping at first I was geting 5-9 kills every now and then but there comes a point where it dosnt help anymore and once you reach that point you will know but then its too late the games unplayable once you reach that point if you are a solo queue person with randoms like myself, I do better off leaving my team and going solo, I may not get any kills but can atleast do damage... vs 30-200 I do with randoms
