I've played a lot of FPS but not much BR. I'm struggling to get a feel for the game. Often can't find any weapon quickly enough after landing, get gunned down before I even know what's going on.
Maybe EA need to implement a training mode, or some kind of skirmish with respawns? Something that would allow us 'less skilled' players to get enough game time to figure it out a bit better.

Hey dude, as someone with +1,000 hours in PUBG and +250 hours in APEX (and counting), the Number 1 tip I can give you, to specifically solve the problem you're having is:
When in the dropship, view your map to check it's trajectory, then plan your jump for the farthest place you can possibly go by keeping your drop-speed betwen 130-140 (at 140, level out - straight), then when dropping to 130, rotate straight down to pick up speed, then when back up to 140 speed level out again.
Rinse-repeat and you can easily make a 1,200m journey from the dropship.
Aim for the corners of the map or edges of the map, keep in mind that may corner areas will have High Loot spawns so you're bound to have at least 1 enemy team there some of the times.
This is just enough for you to find a semi-decent weapon + shield and hopefully kill that other squad to be in peace until the mid-game or late-game.
Altenatively, if nobody's around, you can loot up in peace, shoot a couple of test shots with whatever gun you find (just warn your teammates beforehand or else they might think an enemy is on you) as when I first started I didn't know Prowler & Hemlok ware burst-shot guns, so it came as a surprise when having never fired these weapons until combat - something I learned the hard way :-/
Once your all kitted up, go towards gunshots or straight for the Drops (warned by an audio queue & a blue blinking circles on the map, then in-game, visible by a long light-blue cylinder/halo.
This will ensure you get some gun practice but with less of the RNG in dropping in places like hotzones or skulltown (or the first village beneath the Dropship the moment everyone is allowed to dorp).
Other tips inlcude:
Start testing theweapons the moment you pick them up, to see what they do, you will then start to learn the weapon names, and devlop a personal preference to certain weapons.
As for good entry level weapons, Spitfire or R301 are up there as one of the best, the R99 you should really dispense a few full mags before entering a fight because pulling that trigger is like releasing a fire-breathing dragon from it's chains...but once you get the hang of it, the R99 is an amazing close-range weapon.
Hemlok, change from burst fire to single fire and it becomes a laser.
Don't hesitate to use hipfire when up close or even on the far end of 'close-range' as most weapons are still very accurate and extremely competent hipfiring machines.
Avoid the Mozamique and P2020 at all costs, unless you literally don't have any other option.
Always hold on to Purple attachments or Hop-Ups whenever you find them because it is sometimes more worth it to
to trade a semi-upgraded AR for a Havoc if you have the Golden Hop-up.
Select-fire Hop-up is really good to hold on to because if you find a prowler, change it from Burst-fire to Full-Auto and it becomes another close-range & mid-range BEAST.
You will learn what guns you're good with, and what guns you cannot handle.
If you're a good aim and want to go full rambo with high DPS weapons, try the crazy Wingman + Peacekeeper combo; but if you want a more balance weapon comp, try thet R301 as a main with a Prowler/Spitfire as your secondary.
You can go full Light Ammo with R301 + R99 comp (aka the R400 comp) .
Spitfire + Peacekeeper is a solid comp (only thing to watch out for is going up against a Wingman Player with your Spitfire - DON'T and switch to your Peacekeeper in that case).
Also good team communication really makes a difference, so use the Ping system as much as you can and ask that they do too.
Hope this helps you a bit - best of luck & keep us posted of how you're getting on once you've had more practice!

So basically spend 3 times longer trying to learn the game than you could say games like battlefield. great answer.

A casual mode where you can have like a free respawn ticket if you all die, it's less of a break between the action and allows for a quicker learning curve. No premades allowed.

Depending on which way the ship is going, land either swamps or slum lake.
If you want more game time people dont tend to land there so you can loot up
If you hotdrop and are competing with other teams for guns then you will keep experiencing the same fate

Thanks for the tips, appreciate it. Yeah I take your point about starting further out, I think the thing with AL is I want to stay with the team, and quite often the leader is dropping quite central in the map. Thanks for the advice!
