Before I begin on what may be a controversial and over discussed topic, I'll just clarify, 3 months in and still nothing has changed to rectify the issue. I'm not here to hate on the game, rather the opposite, I'm passionate about its future and hate to see how it’s losing traction in an ever demanding and competitive market.
Yes, I completely agree pushing out weekly updates for the sake of it creates an unhealthy and unrealistic expectation, but surely to maintain longevity and an active player-base, a happy medium should be met? After all this is a battle royale, which releases with limited content (1 map, 1 game mode, etc.) and is expected to grow with regular updates.
For a game that takes the majority of its weapons, character abilities and assets from its predecessor (Titanfall 2), why are we seeing so few and far between substantial updates? Once in a blue moon an update for this game will find its way into my downloads, but I can assure you, when it does it'll be yet another lacklustre attempt at re-balancing and bug fixing (You're telling me I've waited 3 months to see the wingman drop from a 6 bullet mag. to a 4 bullet mag., and yet the server lag, skull town sound glitch and lobby ready up issue continues to plague the game?). The only memorable updates I have from this game, includes the sub-par Havoc, (rather not comment) season pass and the held back content of Octane.
I recently watched an Apex Legends character documentary on YouTube by Respawn, where two developers show so much passion for the characters and lore they have created. My question is what happened to that passion for the game as a whole post-launch?
Article after Article appear online highlighting concurrent player drops / viewership drops and streamers opting for other games, yet this company adamantly stands behind there seasonal update practices. Why weren’t the timelines and development priorities adapted when the game achieved the recognition it did?
3 Months in and we’re yet to see any form of an update that compels the player base to return day-after-day.
I don’t like to use other games as a reference, but fortnite has achieved that formula to bring the player base back routinely. It offers daily/weekly challenges, resets player level each season, player stats/leader boards, seasonal ‘Free’ content (Yeah, that’s for the £20 Valentines skin), map changes, seasonal in-game stories and a daily changing item store that isn’t just using a generic colour generator for every single one of its skins in the game and asking for £20 to do so (My god, I could make better skins with the gun skin creator black ops 2 gave us!).
As for this little rant I’ll end it here, not that it’ll make any difference, but hey it’s off my chest. I hope for any of you reading this can read between the lines in what I was trying to get across and for any developer on Apex Legends that may see this, ask yourself: ‘How can we expect a player-base to remain passionate about the game, if we can’t even provide an adequate service of updating?’.
