can you use custom rosters in head to head online play?

is there a way to use a custom roster and play head to head online with a friend, who also has loaded the same custom roster? my friends and I just want to be able to update the rosters with the recent Free agency moves/trades and I cannot find a way to keep a custom roster loaded while playing head to head with my friends.

I'm guessing this is EA's way to insure people buy the new game but that means people can't play with updated rosters all summer long which is really stupid

I'm not sure how to do this with updated rosters.
