Prefer AMD card since i already have a freesync monitor.
planning to run 1440p @144hz
May I ask, what CPU you are using?
Just asking, because if it is as old as your GPU you may need to upgrade it too, in order to get max fps.

yeah im running a intel 4790K

That CPU is crazy bottleneck at this point, i ran a 4690k with a GTX 1080 and the GPUs amazing performance was completely held down by the CPU. Id rather wait a bit longer till you can upgrade your CPU aswell cause you are prob not gonna see a lot of improvement in many games just because of the CPU

Yeah, I have the same issue, using my old intel xeon still, with a GTX 1060.
I upgraded to a RTX 2070 and tested it for some days. Result: not much of an improvement as my CPU is slowing down the system. So I sent it back and stick with the GTX 1060 again for the moment.
My problem was, that I can not just upgrade the CPU, as the socket 1150 is not common any more. So now I need a new mainboard too, which brings me to upgrade the whole system, including mainboard with 1151 socket, CPU, GPU, RAM and additonal SSD.
But still, his CPU is not THAT old, I think. A better GPU would help, at least for FHD, as the GTX 970 is pretty outdated by now.
When you want to play in 1440p or UHD I would recommend also a better CPU.

i hear good things about this motherboard and its cheaper.
you want to get ram with at least cl15 to get the benefit of your cpu. that ram you listed is cl 16 which is considered slow by some people on youtube.
if you want premium then get cl14, dual channel, 16GB or 32GB. get a ssd for windows, and a case with lots of airflow because these cpus need it they work better with cooler cases. use xmp profile 1 to get the most out of your ram, see the video i linked too earlier for instructions on bios tweaking. cooling is really important.

im just going for the look for that godlike motherboard honestly.

ic really nice ram. heres a unboxing video for the motherboard you linked too;
a word of advice. when you put the cpu on the motherboard, lock the cpu using the pre-installed cpu lock. then after you put the thermal paste on put the heatsink on.
i forgot to do this and almost had an accident i couldnt fix.
its a very inconspicuous lock for the cpu and easy to forget to use.
then with the cpu locked in you need to put the heatsink on and to do this you need access to the back of the motherboard so dont screw in the motherboard to the case then try to put on the heatsink like i did.
keep the motherboard out of the case, put in the cpu, lock the cpu in, then put on the thermal paste then the back of the heatsink then the top of the heatsink, it can be difficult to get the fourth screw in the hold on the heatsink.
it was a very harrowing experience for me i hope you have better time with it!
