The Economy of Battlefield 2042 [new blogpost]

Our philosophy for the Battlefield 2042 economy - it’s important to us to keep the fight fair for everyone.

With each new Season of Battlefield™ 2042, fresh content and experiences will come your way – and this journey across the Seasons will expand the battlefield with new maps, new Specialists, new weapons, vehicles, gadgets, and much more. On this page, you’ll learn how the Battle Pass, the Battlefield Currency, and player progression tie into this journey.

Before we begin, we want to share our philosophy when it comes to the Battlefield 2042 economy. It’s important to us to keep the fight fair for everyone. Therefore, players will never get a gameplay advantage by spending real-life money. In Battlefield 2042, money can only buy cosmetic items or other things that won’t give you any advantages on the battlefield.

Player Progression

Progressing in Battlefield 2042 is as easy as playing the game and earning XP. Assisting your squad, defeating enemies, winning matches, playing the objective – these actions earns you experience points. Once you’ve racked up enough XP, you are promoted to the next Player Level which means new rewards like weapons, gadgets, cosmetics, and more. Stay tuned to our channels for upcoming events where you can earn even more XP. But as you battle away, you will also progress through your Battle Pass of the current Season – which brings us to the next section.

The Battle Pass – Free and Premium

There are two progression paths in the Battle Pass: Free* and Premium. Access to the former is free for all game owners and the latter is accessed by purchasing a Premium Battle Pass or to those who already have a Year One Pass**. All new gameplay-related content such as Specialists, weapons, vehicles, and so on will be free for all Battlefield 2042 players. This content can be unlocked through the Battle Pass. If you should miss the content rolled out in one Season, you can still unlock it at a later stage.

Each Season's Battle Pass consists of 100 tiers and the more you play, the further you will advance through these. Gameplay-related unlocks like weapons and Specialists plus other unlocks like Battlefield Currency will be included in the Free Battle Pass tiers, available to all players. 30 of the 100 rewards are available to all players as part of the Free Battle Pass. However, the Premium Battle Pass comes with a reward for each of the 100 tiers. Going Premium lets you unlock some truly special skins, Player Card Backgrounds, weapon charms, takedowns, additional Battlefield Currency, and more.

Use Battle Pass Points to Unlock Battle Pass Tiers

To reach a new tier in your Battle Pass, you need to earn Battle Pass Points. These are acquired in two ways: by earning XP from playing any game mode in Battlefield 2042, and by completing Weekly Missions. These missions will challenge you to, for instance, revive 10 teammates or capture 5 Conquest flags before the mission period is over.

If you are Premium Battle Pass owner, you can also spend 150 Battlefield Currency on a Tier Skip which lets you jump to the next tier straight away.

Battlefield Currency

Battlefield Currency – or BFC – is the prime medium of exchange in Battlefield 2042. BFC can either be purchased with real money or earned by progressing through the Battle Pass tiers (including some in the free tiers) and getting BFC as a reward. You can spend Battlefield Currency on various things; cosmetic items, a Premium Battle Pass, and item bundles.

As mentioned, players will not get a gameplay advantage by spending real-life money – Battlefield Currency can only be spent on things like cosmetic items that won’t give you any unfair edges on the battlefield.

The Store

The in-game Store is where you can unlock many different items by spending Battlefield Currency, or “BFC”, which is purchased with real-life money or unlocked by progressing through the Free Battlepass tiers. In the Store you will find skins for weapons, vehicles, and Specialists, which will make you stand out on the battlefield. We will update the Store regularly with new content and offers, and some can be bought as bundles at a discount. Don’t worry about items disappearing after a while; most of the content will remain in the Store.

*Free Battle Pass content requires gameplay to unlock. Requires Battlefield 2042 (sold separately) and all game updates to play.

**Premium Battle Pass content requires Year 1 Pass (available for Gold/Ultimate edition owners) or Season 1 Battle Pass (sold separately) and gameplay to unlock. Requires Battlefield 2042 (sold separately) and all game updates to play.

This announcement may change as we listen to community feedback and continue developing and evolving our Live Service & Content. We will always strive to keep our community as informed as possible.

@Anobix When they state that you can progress through the Battlepass in 'any game mode' does that include solo/co-op/portal, or is that speaking of just meaning CQ/BT multiplayer?

"This content can be unlocked through the Battle Pass. If you should miss the content rolled out in one Season, you can still unlock it at a later stage"

I'd like to know what they mean by 'a later stage'. How late? Months after the end of the season? Weeks? Days?

The live service of this game and the battlepass it brings reeks.

Remember when expansions were released with an assortment of content and you could unlock weapons/cosmetics on your own time?

Someone please correct me if I've misunderstood. This sounds a lot like a company using FOMO to push people to grind the battlepass or pay additional money to bypass it

Yep couldn't agree more, they need to just bring back premium DLC's and scrap this "live service" crap, they're obviously terrible at it.

Tell us you abandoned this title without telling us you abandoned this title.

Talk about a waste of time.

I love this caveat at the end:

"This announcement may change as we listen to community feedback and continue developing and evolving our Live Service & Content. We will always strive to keep our community as informed as possible."

So if you are listening to community feedback, add a damn Server Browser for cryin' out loud!

Guess what, most players could care less about cosmetics. That is not content!

@Anobix Pretty much what I understood it would be. With the addition of earning BFC as a free battle pass player. But that matches pretty much what they do in BFV.

Since the incentive is "to stand out on the battlefield" I don't think there will be much in the store that could interest me. But that was to be expected, and matches my experience from BFV.
