Survival slots

So someone told me on a different post that you can see what your teammates have in their survival slot. I play on xbox and I do see my teammates have a box next to their backpack, however the slot is never filled and I've watched my teammates pick up heat shields but it never shows up on the teammate menu. What is going on?
