Suggestions -> 2020 Update for Classic Battlefront II and Jedi Academy

[ Edited ]

Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) and Star Wars Jedi Academy were some of the most critically acclaimed not only Star Wars games, but games in general of their era. Some would argue to this day that Jedi Academy has the best battle system of all Star Wars games and that Battlefront (2004) was a truly revolutionary game.

I congratulate EA for giving the source-code of Jedi Academy for free for the modding team to use however they like.

As such, I suggest to make a "never forget" update. A way of saying "we never forgot these magnificent classics".

The Battlefront II (2005) update:

- New Multiplayer Gamemodes:
* Protect Hero -> Every team starts with 1 Hero from the game's start, your hero's health doesn't drop like in Tatooine Assault Mode (the Heroes vs Villains Map) but if your Hero gets killed the enemy teams gets 1 point, the spawn points are like in Conquest and can be captured to force the hero to fight on the frontline. If you capture all conquest points your team wins, or if you kill the enemy hero enough times you team wins.
* Attack and Defense -> One team starts with only 1 Conquest point and the other team has all other conquest points. The defending team cannot conquer conquest points and once they are conquered they are gone. The Attacking team has to conquer the points in a certain order making the whole battle like a frontline. The attacking team has a respawn of 15 seconds while the attacking team has a respawn of 30 seconds. The attacking team has to capture all conquest points before the time expires, there are no reinforcements like in Conquest mode. Conquering a point will grant you a small additional time.
* Survival -> There are no AIs in the players' team and the other team is made fully of AI. The players team is basically playing a Attack and Defense mode where they are the defending team and the attacking team is a lot more numerous and they have to defend against waves and waves of enemy AI without losing all their conquest points. There is no limit for respawn, but you will respawn at a distance from the point you're supposed to defend and if you lost all your points before the time runs out you have lost the match.
Stormtrooper Zombie Infection -> There is already a mod about this one, basically zombie mode in Star Wars, and it's lore-friendly, the death trooper zombie virus.

- All the maps that were available in Battlefront I (2004):
* Bespin Cloud City (As well as adding the planet in Galactic Conquest mode)
* Bespin Platform
* Geonoisis Spire
* Kamino Tipoca (The Geonoisis and Kamino maps in BF2 are different)
* Khashyyyk Docks
* Khashyyyk Islands
* Naboo Plains
* Rhen Var Citadel (As well as adding the planet in Galactic Conquest mode)
* Rhen Var Harbour
* Tatooine Dune Sea
* Yavin 4 Arena
That's 11 new maps for Battlefront II (2005).

- New Maps:

* Techno Union Ship (episode 1)

* Naboo Palace (episode 1)
* Tatooine Tusken Camp (episode 2)
* Geonoisis Arena (episode 2)
* Coruscant Senate (episode 3)
That's 5 new maps for Battlefront II (2005) making for a total of 16 new maps.

- Edit the game modes to make full use of the map, for example:
* In Hoth Conquest, the Millenium Falcon escape location is locked.
* In Yavin 1 Flag, the Imperial base over the river and the rebel base in the building should be the flag drop locations, currently they are not used.
* Every map should have a Conquest, 1 Flag, 2 Flags, Protect Hero, Attack and Defense and Survival modes.

* Some maps should have Heroes vs Villains Mode (Jedi vs Sith, like the current Assault on Tatooine)

- Maybe a competitive mode without bots, only players, and Ranks?
* Ranks: Bronze V - I, Silver V - I, Gold V - I, Platinum V - I, Diamond V - I, Master V - I. In total 30 ranks.
* Or Ranks: Cadet, Private, Corporal, Seargent, Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Commander, Colonel, General. In total 10 ranks.
* I prefer the 2nd ranking with 10 ranks that are Star Wars related, for it's unlikely the classic Battlefront II will every make it into a fully competitive game, it's mostly a fun and nostalgia game.

- Add the Following planets in the Galactic Conquest mode: Bespin (Cloud City map), Rhen Var (Citadel map), Death Star (Galactic Civil War only, new Empire home base, is destroyed if conquered, make Endor playable in the Clone Wars as well).

- New XL game mode for the following maps (the maps are quite large and with open space): Bespin: Cloud City, Rhen Var: Citadel, Utapau: Sinkhole, Yavin 4: Temple, Geonoisis Spire, Khashyyyk Docks, Naboo Plains, Mygetto: War-Torn City, Tatooine Dune Sea, Endor: Bunker, Coruscant: Jedi Temple, Dagobah: Swamp, Felucia: Marshland.

- The possibility to play as the native species regardless of gamemode. Right now, you can only play as the native species in Hunt mode.
* When playing on Geonoisis you should have the ability to play as Geonoisian as CIS in Conquest, 2 Flags and other game modes while also being able to play as the droids.
* On Endor you can play Evok as Rebels.
* On Jabba's Palace as Empire/CIS you can play Gammorean too.
Exceptions:
* On Kashyyyk you can already play Wookies as Rebels.
* On Hoth nobody will have Wampas as allies.
* On Mos Eisley Javas are on nobody's side.
* On Naboo you shouldn't be able to play Gungans as they didn't exist in the cities and are only available in Hunt mode, maybe on the map Naboo: Plains if introduced for Republic/Rebels.

- Just like it currently is, dying as the native species won't count towards dropping the score in Conquest mode. This way, a player can choose a more powerful unit that costs him 1 conquest point if he dies or a native species that is weaker but will not cost him conquest points if he dies, but there's still AIs that will cost him conquest points when he dies. There needs to be at least 75% - 25% Army units and Native units players to avoid spamming the native units.

- New Hunt Map: Coruscant - Clone Troopers vs Jedi. This will be part of the exceptions, meaning you shouldn't be able to play as Jedi in non-Hunt gamemodes, because it doesn't make sense to have Jedi ally with the CIS and will lead to balance issues, where as the Hunt mode is already a for fun mode where balance is not a goal.

- Very Important, because it's very annoying: In conquest mode, the game should not end when your conquest points drop to 0. But when your conquest points drop to 0 you should be out of reinforcements, then all your units can be seen on the enemy map, and only after all your units are dead should you lose the game. It's annoying to lose a close game where you could have won but a random AI died and now you've dropped to 0 and lost.

- If the game has a timer and when the timer expire both teams have the same number of flags or the exact same number of reinforcements on Conquest, the ressult should be a yellow "Draw".

The Jedi Academy update:

- New Multiplayer Gamemodes:

* Jedi Master (from Jedi Outcast) -> 1 player is the Jedi Master with master-level force powers, the other players are simple soldiers, the soldier that kills the Jedi Master becomes the Jedi Master.
* Conquest (similar to Battlefront II) -> Every team is made out of soldiers with only the best player in each team being able to be a Jedi/Sith. There are conquest points on the map, whoever captures more conquest points drains the points of the enemy team, the first team to reach 0 loses.
* Double Duel -> A 2vs2 duel mode.
* Survival -> Players cooperate against waves of AI controled Stormtroopers, Mercenaries and Dark Jedi, every 10 waves there can be a boss too such as Alora, Rosh, Tavion. There can be dark side based maps too where the enemies are Rebels and Jedi the bosses are Kyle Katarn and Luke Skywalker. The place you need to defend is the center of the map for each of the maps, you need to defend that place until the time runs out, the player team has a limited number of respawns meaning that if they die a lot they can lose the game. The enemy AI spawns at the corners of the map and come in waves.

- New Maps from Jedi Outcast:
-- Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Jedi Master, Conquest, Survival:
* Bespin Streets (but upgrade the background so that Force Jump 3 Jedi can't jump off the map)
* Death Star
* Star Destroyer
* Garbage Facility
* Nar Shaadda Streets (or force push heaven)
* Massassi Temple
-- Capture the Flag
* Bespin Exhaust Shafts
* Garrison 27-D
* Warring Factions
* Temple Tournament
-- Duel, Power Duel, Double Duel:
* Imperial Shuttle Bay
* Carbon-Freeze Chamber (epic location from the movies)
* Battleground Jedi (but needs a lot of graphic updates)
* Trial Pit
* Imperial Labs: Raven
* Hangar Bay 72
* Ceremonial Hall (epic location of the duel with the last boss)
* Training Rooms (part of the Jedi Academy Temple)
In total 18 new maps.

- New Maps from Mystery of the Sith and Jedi Knight:
-- Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Jedi Master, Conquest, Survival:
* Tibanna Mining Outpost
* Imperial Fortress
* Imperial Training Facility
* Ruins of the Sith
* Reactor Coolant Facility
* Tatooine Homestead
* Cloud City Gantry
* Imperial Throne Room
-- Duel, Power Duel, Double Duel:
* Tree Canopy
* Hutt Palace
* Spaceport
* Cloud City
In total 12 new maps.

- New Maps from the Singleplayer Locations:
-- Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Jedi Master, Conquest, Survival:
* Korriban Valley -> from the last level where you battle Tavion.
* Hoth Echo Base -> from the Snow Level.
* Jedi Academy -> The whole Jedi Academy, includes the Speech Room.
* Mos Eisley -> the Mos Eisley map from the first levels but all doors open.
* Vjun Courtyard -> A courtyard from Vjun where there is also acid rain.
-- Duel, Power Duel, Double Duel:
* Hoth Computers Room -> where you battle Alora.
* Academy Speech Room -> where Luke Skywalker greets the Jedi.
* Vjun Duel Room -> The room where you dueled Rosh.
* Taspir Base -> The room where you dueled Alora the 2nd time.
* Korriban Sith Chamber -> The room where you fight Tavion, the final boss.
In total 10 new maps. With all from above, in total 30 new maps.

- Move the Yavin Training Room duel map to a FFA map, since it's a relatively big map.

- Power Duel Update: The 1 player has 150 HP and a higher force powers level than the 2 players in team.

Mention: The Battlefront II classic survival mode is a bit different from the Jedi Academy survival mode becuase their playstyle was also a bit different. In Battlefront II you were expected to die, in Jedi Academy you play as a Jedi and should be able to kill a lot of enemy units without dying.

You can call this the: "Nostalgia and Fun Update" or the "Never Forget Update".

A lot of people would love this.

Additionally, you can add new skins for units and players as well as an optional HD grahpics from the option menu. There are already mods that are doing that.

To give credit where credit is due, EA didn't release the source code of Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast and Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Raven Software did. EA wasn't involved in the development or publishing of Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy.

Reputedly, EA even took issue with a particular Star Wars fan project (which was inspired by Free Radical Design's shelved Star Wars Battlefront III game), supposedly perceiving it as a threat to EA's take on the Star Wars Battlefront series. That project survived, but it had to remove all Star Wars references.

EA has an exclusive license to make new Star Wars titles (e.g. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order) or remake/reenvision previous titles (e.g. Star Wars Battlefront) for PC and consoles through at least 2023, but presumably it doesn't have license to create and publish updates for the preexisting LucasArts' Star Wars catalog (if it did, you wouldn't see posts like this).

Even if it did, since Jedi Academy and Star Wars Battlefront II (Classic, 2005) weren't developed or published by EA* and are over 14 years old, I doubt EA would be interested in releasing new content for them. EA hasn't shown much interest in preserving its own back catalog, let alone providing updates for the back catalog of another company.

*Jedi Academy was developed by Raven Software and published by LucasArts; Battlefront II Classic was developed by Pandemic Studios (prior to the acquisition of Pandemic Studios by EA as part of the VG Holding Corp. deal) and published by LucasArts.

@CantirasEA won't have much to gain from them in terms of cash, but it will be a good PR move. When a company updates an old game it tends to appear in the news and it shows to the fans that the company cares about the franchise. But as you said, since they weren't developed or published by EA, they don't have the rights to update Jedi Academy and Battlefront II classic.
